We were lucky to catch up with Christy Halverson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Christy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Is there a lesson you learned in school that’s stuck with you and has meaningfully impacted your journey?
I find networking to be one of the most important lessons I learned throughout my college experience. I went to Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta, Georgia. With it being an art school, I was constantly surrounded with creatives. As a freshman I was still very reserved and nervous to meet new people. My first year was cut short due to covid which then put a huge set back on my college experience. Once I had returned to school to take in-person classes, I noticed the people I had met either moved back home or stopped attending SCAD. I felt like I was starting all over again. I remember thinking, I should’ve been more involved with the school or kept in touch more. Looking back at it now, I realized it all worked out for a reason. I was then introduced to my now favorite professors, Jeff Rich and Ryan Debolski. I remember I had taken a photo book making class with Professor Ryan where he encouraged us to get feedback from one another on our projects and to create friendships amongst our peers. Meeting other creatives keeps me inspired by their talents, creativity, and background. As I kept working towards my degree, I was taking fashion photography classes with Professor Jeff where I was meeting people who all had the same passion as me. We collaborated on photoshoots together where we would share photography tips, techniques, and inspire each other with our styles. Since then, these people have become my best friends. We continue to keep in touch and attend networking events, photography exhibitions, help each other with projects, and refer one another to magazines. I truly can’t wait to see where the future takes all of us and the projects we will take on.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into photography when I was 14 years old. As a teen where IPhones were the coolest thing around, I was captivated with how social media and youtube worked. There was this youtuber whose aesthetic I absolutely loved. It was very Tumblr 2014 style if you can imagine. I was heavily inspired so I played around with my IPhone and took photos of anything anywhere I’d go. I’ve always loved how pretty the earth is and had an obsession with sunsets and the ocean. I was pretty shy growing up so nature was my model for the time being. It wasn’t until I was a sophomore in high school where I got my first camera. This is when I felt professional enough to take photos of my friends. I was constantly shooting portraits and posting them to my website and Instagram. As time went on, I realized I love shooting on location more than in the studio. Still to this day I stand by that. In 2020, a full circle moment came and I had the opportunity to photograph that same youtubers clothing brand. I was on an ultimate high that day! I continued to learn more about photography in school and consistently shot new models and friends for my own freelance and school projects. As of now, I am still doing freelance and working full-time in a photography studio. My main focus is portrait and editorial work. I love the idea of playing around with movement, vibrant colors, and water. My dream is to work for a fashion magazine one day or start my own. I want to continue growing my photography skills and try out new styles. I recently got a point and shoot film camera which has been so fun to carry around and capture spontaneous moments. As a photographer, I photograph various types of people who absolutely love the limelight and some who never even modeled before. My end goal for every shoot is for everyone to feel comfortable and love the finished product. Photography is a great way to express yourself since it has no creative boundaries. I find going into the shoot with less high expectations make my images and the experience come out a million times better. Sometimes what you least expect ends up being the winning shot. I’m really proud of how much my style and confidence has grown within photography. I cannot wait for what’s to come!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a photographer is being able to create something that can inspire people. I’m constantly inspired by my peers and their art so given the chance to do that as well is a blessing.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I find the best source of retrieving new clients is from social media and finding them through other models I have worked with. Social media is a huge thing in today’s society and really has helped people to connect and network with others. Follow other creatives that you may not have met before, can lead you to creating new friends and possible collaborations. Networking is highly suggested in the creative industry. Once you meet one person, it opens the door for many more.
