We recently connected with Christina Ness and have shared our conversation below.
Christina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One thing we always find fascinating is how differently entrepreneurs think about revenue growth and cost reductions – both can be powerful ways to improve profitability. What do you spend more of your time and energy on?
If I were to start my business over today, I’d engage professional UX designers sooner, and then also work to test and iterate the product quicker through alpha’s and beta’s. Evenigo was built in house, and it was an adventure learning to design and then launch it, but I think if we would have brought in a couple more seasoned pro’s at the beginning to help out, we would have been able to iterate and reach customers sooner. The most important thing to remember though is to launch. It’s easy to look back and think about what you’d do differently, but if you’re not embarrassed by the first version of your product, you’re too late.

Christina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Sure thing! I’m the Founder and CEO of Evenigo, a company that makes sure you don’t miss out by putting your favorite events, deals and drops on your calendar. We’re a B2B2C business that encourages brands, artists, venues and influencers to post public calendars that their fans can “follow” to receive big updates. We want this to be an opt in on both sides, so the fans only receive those key big invites vs. the every day spam that they see in their email inbox.
I’ve been working on it for just over a year now, but previously spent my career in the entertainment industry. Throughout my career, I’ve been lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with, advise and secure funding for a number of businesses, with some of my favorite experiences being running communication and deliverables for Activision Blizzard’s Call of Duty and Overwatch Leagues, as well as working with top producers Done+Dusted and ‘Idol’ creator Simon Fuller to fund and launch new business concepts. With these experiences, I was able to sort of “feel out” the startup world without the risk, so that definitely helped when I was looking to start my own business.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building a social media presence is something everyone should learn how to do, and being the face of a brand as the CEO is crucial. This is such a process of trial and error, but there are so many things people can do to create great content. I try to post one reel or carousel on Instagram at least three days per week, and then also engage with accounts in my niche for about 10-15 minutes per day. There are plenty of free tools that people can use to help with their content, like searching top terms to vlog about on YouTube or in-app analytics that provide engagement feedback, but I’d also recommend using a paid tool fi you can like Instaclubhub, because they do things like create your content calendars for you and provide live reel review sessions so that you can get direct insight on Instagram’s algorithm, as well as what’s working for your peers.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson that I’ve had to unlearn is that you should be able to do everything for your business yourself. It’s really important for an entrepreneur to know their business inside and out, but it’s also a waste of time to work really hard learning things that you’re not good at, and don’t need to be good at. Prioritize your strengths and secondary skills and then outsource your weaknesses if at all possible.
