We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Christian Ojala. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Christian below.
Christian , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I decided to take the risk of being a business owner instead of having a normal 9-5 job. Starting a business from scratch is extremely stressful and can be an extremely big risk. Starting from scratch, you are essentially starting from the bottom and having to work your way to the top. Meeting new people, working for free, building a portfolio, and building your network takes lots of time and a proven track record to finally start making money doing something you love. In my case, I wanted to follow my passions and start a full time career flying drones and filming the world through the vision of a camera. It so happens to be a new path that hasn’t really been understood by many yet, but it clearly can be extremely enjoyable and profitable. I risked putting all of my effort and time into my business and perfecting my craft. If it didn’t work out, I honestly have no idea what I would be doing at the moment. Starting a business in high school is something that usually doesn’t happen very often. I didn’t party and didn’t hang out with many friends when I was younger because I was putting all of my time and effort into building my business. I felt that I was missing out in life, but I look back now and see myself preparing for my future earlier than others. I may have not had the most outstanding early 20s, but I sure figured out how to set myself on a path that is ready to go once I am out of college.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Christian Ojala and I am a 21 year old cinematographer and drone pilot based out of Boulder Colorado. I started off by being infatuated with drone racing and aviation. Having a strong passion for things that fly, I surrounded myself with building drones, racing, and airplanes. I got into the industry by working with many automotive businesses and aviation businesses prior to being a drone pilot. Starting out as a photographer for a few years, I then dabbled with an interest in video creation and it was all uphill from there. Today, I am the owner of Avionik Studios LLC. which is an aerial production company that operates all over the world. We actively work in Denver, Austin, and Los Angeles, but have been fortunate enough to have scaled to large projects that have landed us in locations such as Zurich Switzerland and Town “Reykjavik” in front of Iceland. We offer commercial drone services to local and large brands, as well as commercial industries. Specializing in automotive, aviation, action sports, and real estate, we have worked with many reputable brands and corporations such as GoPro, RedBull, Mercedes, Can Am, and many more. What sets us apart from others is that we are able to engage with our clients and deliver their visions and turn them into a reality. I am most proud of what we have accomplished thus far. Being able to work with many well known brands is a dream come true. Being able to fly drones and capture a client’s vision is what makes me extremely happy. Avionik Studios is ready to cater just about any desire you are looking for to fulfill your aerial needs. Whether it be a live broadcast to deliver a live feed, or capturing footage that is risky and dangerous that can’t be attained any other way, we are ready to deliver.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building a massive network on social media is a crucial part of being a filmmaker. Managing to create content weekly and posting almost every single day can be difficult, but it helps us grow our creativity and allows us to scale our audience and keep growing. Constantly posting footage that is different than other filmmakers or drone pilots is what makes you stand out. Advice I can give, is to be persistent with social media and post everything. Most creators get skeptical about posting some epic content. My advice is to post everything because you never know what each video is going to bring to the table.

Do you have multiple revenue streams – if so, can you talk to us about those streams and how your developed them?
In my opinion, with business you always want to find multiple streams of income. Relying on one source can be risky and can put you in a difficult situation. I operate with quite a few streams of revenue straining from my production company, social media, podcasts, merchandise, building custom drone platforms, and ironically real estate. I have just started dabbling with real estate and I can definitely say, it is a fantastic asset to have to generate income.
