Christian , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Any advice for creating a more inclusive workplace?
I spent over 25 years working for other people or having business partners, and it taught a lot about what not to do! I am proud of the journey I have been on, learning to deal with all types of people. Being is shops that were divided, like cliques some artist don’t get along and some shop owners aren’t present there is a lot of shops that have artist that don’t enter act with each other at work and out of work. I believe the best shops are the ones where all of the staff including the owner/owners are always in the same place work wise and creatively!!!! The most important thing I could say is that, you should ALWAYS believe in yourself first!! Take the risk. Make the hard decision to branch out .put in the hard work it takes to get what you want in life.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello. my name is Christian Marek
I am a tattooer/artist of over 28 years now.
I grew up in California and from a very young age I knew I was going to be an artist/tattooer
when I was 12 I built my first “homemade” tattoo “gun” and got into a lot of trouble for it. When I was 14 I decided to
tattoo some kids in my neighborhood, needless to say this didn’t go over to well. I ended up doing 18 months in a juvenile detention center … when I got out I told my mom that tattooing was the only thing I wanted to do… she was not happy, turns out she was my biggest supporter. Once she saw I was serious she supported me whole heartedly.. I spent a long time working for other people and helping them get to a place in life, financially, that was what seemed out of reach for me. during this time I found myself acquiring a healthy drinking habit as well as a drug addiction. I spent many years wasting my time and jeopardizing my health. After numerous failed attempts at sobriety, and after my wife and son stepped in I finally got a grip on myself and got sober. I have been sober for over 6 years and have never felt better, more clear headed and just all around a better person. a few years ago my beautiful wife and I decided to open our own tattoo shop and after 25 years of helping others get their goals I decided it was my turn to focus on myself and my family. I taught my son how to tattoo as well as my wife. we have a beautiful tattoo shop in Tucson az
I have a strong and unwavering work ethic and believe that all people deserve to be treated as equals… I think one of the many things that set me apart from others is my ability to work with people. coming from a place of honesty and integrity I strive to make sure that each client is led down the right path to get the art they are truly looking for… our brand is MAREK TATTOO STUDIOS we have a team of professionals that can handle any type of project. I am a truly believer in that you should always believe in yourself. take chances, take risks, get up and go get the dream you have …………..

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
word of mouth and honesty. being punctual, making the hard but right choices

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
be picky build your team rather then hire a team.. lead by example, make sure you maintain a healthy home life so you can maintain a positive work vibe.
