We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chiachen Wang. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chiachen below.
Chiachen, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your career and how did you resolve those issues?
I began painting in 2016 after moving to California while working full-time in marketing. To explore whether art was the right path for me, I initially started taking Saturday classes at a community art center. After two years of balancing weekend and evening online classes with my job, I made the decision to switch to part-time, which allowed me to pursue art more seriously.
A significant part of this journey has been the support of my spouse, who has been instrumental in making it possible for me to juggle work and the cost of living in the Bay Area while dedicating time to my artistic development. With this support, I’ve been able to continue learning, creating my own art, and entering shows and competitions. It’s been a gradual process of balancing work and my passion— not easy, but with this foundation, I’ve been able to navigate both worlds more confidently.

Chiachen, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve steadily honed my skills and found my creative voice since my art journey began in 2016. Currently, I focus on figurative and animal subjects, using oil paints as my primary medium. The process of developing a figurative theme starts with ideas from my imagination, which I then shape into cohesive compositions. This involves designing the layout, sourcing the right models for photo shoots, and translating these concepts onto the canvas. I strive to capture fleeting moments, concepts, and emotional connections within my subjects, creating a unique perspective that celebrates the beauty of nature and the simplicity of life. By blending form, light, and brushstrokes, I aim to evoke a sense of harmony in my art.
Since 2023, I’ve entered prestigious art competitions and have been selected and awarded for my work. These recognitions have been both humbling and motivating, encouraging me to push forward on my artistic journey. I believe that constant exploration and experimentation are key to finding my own artistic path. As I continue to evolve, I plan to expand my knowledge into landscape and abstract art, incorporating these elements into future works, and ultimately discovering my own unique voice through ongoing learning and self-expression.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My journey to becoming an artist has been one of resilience and persistence. With a background in Interior Architecture (BA) and Marketing Communications (MS), spinning to art has been far from straightforward. Juggling between my day job, pursuing art learning, and managing other responsibilities has often left me questioning how to find the balance between it all. Yet, despite the challenges, I’ve continued to push forward on this path, knowing that art is where my heart truly lies.
I’m still on this journey of discovery, trying to carve out the next steps for my art and my life. While I dream of having a solo exhibition one day, I’m not in a rush. My focus is on creating something that is authentic to who I am — art that reflects my inner world, my emotions, and my experiences. Through every obstacle, I’m learning to trust the process, knowing that my artistic voice will emerge with time, patience, and dedication. This journey may not be easy, but it’s leading me closer to the work I truly want to share with the world.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being creative is the opportunity to express myself and connect with others on a deeper level. Creativity offers a unique outlet – a channel to explore, excel, and bring ideas to life in ways that words alone can’t capture. As an artist, I aim to tell the stories of my subjects — whether human, animal, flower, or landscape — through my own eyes and emotions. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about translating those stories into visual expressions that resonate with viewers. When my work touches someone’s heart and soul, it creates a bridge of shared experience, and that connection is truly the most meaningful part of what I do.
