We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chelsea Bytes a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chelsea, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry? Any stories or anecdotes that illustrate why this matters?
Many Industries are still learning the technical implications of what it means to be a streamer. Besides this, every community is different and provides a unique story to their audience. This means every stream has its own value AND its own price. Trying to boil a stream down to just cold hard numbers is missing the point of community building. Expectations of what a streamer is able to provide to brands would be more realistic if they understood how a streamer fits into their content/advertising strategy. Every company interested in social media should have an expert in content creation so that the experience can be pleasant for both parties.
Chelsea, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started as a streamer in 2018 simply sharing my life with viewers on Twitch. This led to building a community that became invested in my personal growth as a content creator, pc builder, and many other interests I’ve shared with them over the years. Much of my community is built on unique events, giveaways, and other experiences over the years! We’ve reached amazing goals like working with Amazon, Twitch, and G2-esports. I think my work ethic and “of-course” my personality are things that set me apart from the rest. My experience in computer science and pc building are *very* unique skills across content creators as well. I am currently MOST proud of my work as a Twitch Guild Leader with my Unity Guilds team. We’ve accomplished creating a space for women on Twitch to communicate and support each other across ALL forms of content creation: branding, sponsorships, best practices, etc. I hope the power of a space like this will create real change in the content creation space.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Impressing myself! I think the most freeing part of being a creative is that the only real bar is yourself. If you keep surpassing your standards, your audience will definitely follow. People like to overthink what sets them apart when the real question is what bring you joy. We are not original! Someone has done our ideas 5 times over, the only difference is doing it our way. Once you get past the initial jitters and just do it, the faster you can get into the flow of your creative process.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I WISH I had a Twitch Unity Guild when I was coming up! Having a dedicated group of peers to help guide me to the answers I desperately need would have sped me up a TON. And having a community always makes me feel less alone. Even if I couldn’t have a guild, just a tribe of friends who knew what I was going through definitely makes the difference.
