We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chase Wilsey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chase below.
Hi Chase, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
When it comes to managing money for clients, most advisors look for a client’s risk tolerance to determine an asset allocation model for their portfolio. At our firm our money is managed right alongside our client’s money and we implement a value approach utilizing fundamental analysis to build portfolios. Rather than simply placing client’s money into bonds because they have a low risk tolerance, we say we would rather invest our clients money into a sound investment and educate them about that investment. Using bonds as an example, we all know that when interest rates go up, bond prices go down. In a rising interest rate environment we do not believe bonds are a good place to be. At the end of the day our philosophy is that we are here to make our clients money by utilizing a proven value strategy.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Our company, Wilsey Asset Management, has built a reputation for effective investment management and expert financial guidance along with financial planning services nationwide. Our goal is to make our clients money and provide attractive returns on their investments transparently. We offer investment services for many types of accounts including trusts, individual & joint, corporate, IRAs, 401ks, and company pension plans. We also a separate financial planning service that focuses on areas including tax planning, estate planning, and cash flow analysis.
I was lucky enough to grow up around the business and started working with my father, Brent, when I was a junior at Poway high school. After being around the business I knew that it was the direction I wanted to go with my career and started studying finance at the University of San Diego. After one year at USD I transferred to Northern Arizona University, where I completed my degree in finance. Shortly after I received my MBA from Mississippi State University.
So far in my career, I’m most proud of the ways that we have been able to help clients reach their financial goals. I remember when I first started my dad told me a story of a client that requested my dad come see him on his death bed as he wanted to thank him for making him a millionaire. It was that story that really made me want to get into the business and it has been great seeing clients reach their dream retirements over the past several years.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
The foundation of our business has always been that the client comes first and that we act in their best interest. We have a motto that our clients are like family to us. While we want to do a great job managing their money, we know how important the relationship and trust component of the business is when it comes to peoples finances. It’s for this reason that we maintain a retention ratio over 95% and have been able to keep many happy customers for as along as 30 years in some cases.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I believe our media presence has really helped us reach new prospects and deliver our brand’s message. We are able to leverage both radio and tv to educate people about not just our firm but also general financial knowledge and guidance when it comes to investing and financial planning. I personally do financial segments with F0x 5 San Diego every other Wednesday and Brent does financial segments with KUSI every other Sunday. The Smart Investing Show with Brent and Chase Wilsey has been one of our greatest accomplishments. It has been on San Diego radio for nearly 30 years and can currently be heard on Am 760 or Fm 97.3 on Saturday mornings from 8-9 AM. It is also podcasted on our website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and many other podcast platforms. The show is meant to help educate investors when it comes navigating financial markets and it is a call in show.
