We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Charminque Greer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Charminque below.
Charminque , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Picture February 2020, the Covid -19 pandemic has just begun, jobs are laying off people and the medical industry was in dire need of help with the patients. I decided I should fill the void needed. I had been laid off from my outpatient job and was sitting home with a will to want to help others. Then it came to me I can offer trainings for Indic whom want to help within the medical community. Since businesses was closed and we had a limit on how many could meet; we invented Homestudy where we would come your home of course following safety precautions, protocols and procedures for Covid compliance. The at home studying effect wowed those in our community and open new opportunities to those who needed it at the time. We would train them specifically to not only protect them and others against Covid but the necessary skills needed to become a Medical Assistant and be a major part of the medical team. After weeks went by and word was spreading, the restrictions loosened our community shared with others how great we were in getting them trained and national certified in a medical assisting it lead to us opening up a bigger program. Now we not only offer to everyday students, we also provide free training courses to adolescents in partnership with Baltimore City Parks and Recreations, States health department and Baltimore’s Public Schools systems. Our expansion and support has lead us to amazing opportunities such as a segment to be honored by ABC news Midday with Elsa, Marquis Who’s Who’s, and major publications. We have launched our own Ebook and website to help others all over the country become a medical professional in the comfort of their homes. We have over 700 graduates who all have successfully been employed, built their careers through other skills and gained employment partnerships to support their careers. Our focus was to help replenish the staff needed during Covid and now it’s taking us to new heights, new opportunities and into the future with more advancement in healthcare training..
Charminque , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
B’More Center for Healthcare and Continuing Education is an allied healthcare training center that provides national certification courses. Started during the height of the pandemic in 2020 we have now managed to provide not only training to the public but also to the community that normally doesn’t get the opportunities to advance.
Our program successfully has over 700 graduates with certifications as
Medical Assistants, Phlebotomist, Clinical Assistants, Specimen Processing and more with a national license that allows growth and movement within their profession. We created a hybrid approach to training we believe that some skills need to be hands on so it will built memory and knowledge of that skillset. Our course’s curriculum includes updated information about the profession of study and our take home kits to help ensure further learning and practice outside the course has led to even more success. Lastly our new wave we want to share Ebook learning system that’ll allow training at home with look along videos, supplies and hands on learning tools and the scheduling at your convenience will ensure all our students can learn either in session or online. We developed each program with our students in mind to make sure we expand the learning experience of each student!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The support of my community pushed my business forward due to them being able to see my journey through the process of creating this program. I made sure to create a program that would suit them and help offer opportunities they normally can’t afford or obtain. Because I was engaging in my community asking what needs they have, finding ways to fund and address those needs and help them achieve success in their career. The community has seen me go from activism, missionary work and standing on business on the behalf of my community. They trust me!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
After so many good times unfortunately we experienced a bad time. Last year I had went in for normal checkup and was surprised to find my breast cancer had return after two years of remission. During that period I was so depressed, Ill and couldn’t maintain my business. I thought of closing and selling my business despite all my work. I had given up but thankfully I got a call from the baltimore city schools they wanted to get me into training for their upcoming graduates. I pushed myself and completed three back to back sessions which lead to us being honored with Baltimore city school Championships of the Community in their newsletter. All high school graduates all then were hired by hospitals and urgent care’s immediately after graduation which lead to continuous contracts and stability for our business to recover and improve!
