We were lucky to catch up with Charmaine Ross recently and have shared our conversation below.
Charmaine, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I have been able to make a full time career being a creative. My journey started around 2012 when I opened my first boutique. I started putting together photo shoots as well as teaching myself graphics. I’ve always had a great imagination and a keen eye for detail that has cultivated into a myriad of projects produced by me.

Charmaine, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Charmaine Ross, born creative. A string of different careers and businesses have led me to this point. I’ve been an entrepreneur for over 18 years. I started my first business as a wholesaler. By the age of 24, I started my first two boutiques with my partner Kinshasa Brown. We put together photo shoots for different clients which help me develop my eye for detail. From there I developed a cosmetic line for which I took full responsibility for our creative projects and campaigns. I continue to expand my brand by collaborating on various projects and marketing campaigns with my brands and other brands and businesses

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is being able to constantly create things. Constantly expanding my projects and never being the same thing twice is what I love. I love change and never having any two things the same.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think non-creatives struggle with understanding how people can get overwhelmed in creating . They tend to think making flyers and advertising is not a big deal to put together when its actually a large project to overview and creating campaigns for marketing. I think in one way they believe there are simple approaches to being creative not understanding the fundamentals that come with having to always being engaged with a project. Bottom line is things are never that simple, but if you apply yourself you will see the whole scope coming together. Projects take time and creativity to come together.
