We recently connected with Charlise Walker and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Charlise, thanks for joining us today. Let’s talk about keeping costs under control when growing. How have you managed to keep costs from getting out of control?
To manage costs effectively, it’s important to assess what the business actually needs first. When it comes to software programs, I usually check out free versions, and for supplies, I keep track of inventory and use coupons. Additionally, I maintain a list of items and software programs that may be useful in the future. Recently, I had to reduce expenses in my business. I questioned if certain software programs, such as those for running funnels or advertising, were truly necessary. I realized that some tasks can be achieved for free or through the features provided by website builders.
Charlise, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Lately, I’ve been exploring my creative side through Charlise Rice Books and Merch. I’ve authored four self-published books, designed unique merchandise, and crafted handmade jewelry. My books allow me to share my experiences, share my knowledge, and offer healthy coping mechanisms through poetry and journaling. Through my handmade jewelry, I can showcase my creativity and offer others a chance to be encouraged, gift a special item, or indulge themselves. Handmade jewelry has the power to add to one’s beauty or awaken their identity, and I create pieces for both men and women. My service-oriented business is Lise’s Business Enterprise where I provide services as a Notary Public (mobile and remotely), Resume Writer, Job Prep Virtual Facilitator, and Exam Proctor for local residents.
Overall, I am most proud that I started, I push through, I am creative, service the community, and partner with some other businesses with my services.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Towards the end of last year, I had to assess my business carefully as the products weren’t selling as well as expected online. I set some goals to improve the situation. I decided to increase my online presence by showcasing how I make my handmade jewelry and signing up for vendor markets. I even took a chance on Tiktok, although I am still learning.
Regarding my services, I had to make some tough decisions. I paused my nonprofit consultations and stopped doing credit repair as they were not generating enough revenue to keep my business afloat.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
To grow my social media following, I share my posts with friends and family and create live and how-to videos. At vendor markets, I remind customers to follow, like, or subscribe to my social media channels. It’s important to keep promoting your social media everywhere your audience may look, including on your website, business cards, and profile pages. SEO is also crucial, and I took a free training course with Hubspot to better understand how it impacts my business. It’s important to remember that SEO takes time to build, and I recommend taking Google Analytics training as well, which is also free. By utilizing SEO and Google Analytics website reports, you can gain insight into what your potential customers are viewing on your website and what they are not. This information can be used to make necessary improvements over time. I am constantly striving to enhance my websites to optimize traffic flow.
