We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Charles Wright. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Charles below.
Alright, Charles thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I would have to say “Express Yourself” was the record that changed my life.

Charles, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well, I’ve always had this burning desire to cultivate a soul band that could encapsulate the sheer energy of R&B and push its boundaries to the absolute brink. That’s where the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band came into play—a collective of truly incredible musicians. Together, we spun out some chart-topping hits, and among them, the timeless gem “Express Yourself” still stands as a proud testament.
Crafting that song, especially the iconic bass riff brought to life by my dear friend Melvin Dunlap, filled me with immense pride. Throughout my extensive career, I delved into the rich tapestry of music, traversing from the early Doo Wop era right through to the funky, soulful vibes of the ’70s. But you know what remained a constant force? My unrelenting passion for music—it’s the beating heart of everything I do.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Supporting artists means respecting their craft, fair compensation, and providing accessible resources. Education, mentorship, and collaboration are key.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being an artist for me is the connection it fosters. Seeing people moved by the music I’ve created over the years, witnessing their emotions, joy, or even introspection—it’s an incredible feeling. Being able to express myself freely and leave a lasting impression through my music is truly fulfilling.
