We recently connected with Chantrell Lewis and have shared our conversation below.
Chantrell , appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of the most meaningful projects I have worked on as an author would be my book, “Black Girl’s Guide to Ladyhood”. This book is so meaningful to me because it is everything I would have wished to have had access to growing up. I share many personal and relatable stories in hopes that the next girl who reads it will have a much smoother route through puberty and discovering who she is and how to best take care of herself.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a multihyphenate, I do some of everything. I write, teach, act, braid hair, model and run a Non Profit corporation called The Jar of Sunshine Inc. Surprisingly, each of my disciplines flow into each other and support one another, so doing “some of everything” is not difficult! For example, the books I write as an author are sold to support the Non Profit and I use my on-going experience as a performer to support the performing arts classes I teach. I am really proud of the work that I do because I knew, growing up, I never wanted to do just one thing. I never accepted one thing as being enough and because of that, I decided not to limited myself. In realizing how boundless my life is, I have been able to master my crafts and develop my skills in doing the things that I love in life.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
There are many things people will struggle to understand about my journey. One thing I will say is, I discovered that I can do any and everything I set my mind to. If i’m patient and diligent there are no limits. We all have a choice to try everything and I reccomend everyone, creatives and non-creatives, to put it all out there and see what sticks. You never know what you can discover about yourself and how your life’s journey can change because of that.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
Overall the mission driving my creative journey is to share the impact of creativity in all forms. It has molded and shaped my life in a way that I would not have experienced unless I had access to the arts and other creative outlets. Everyone deserves to experience the liberation creativity can bring.
