Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Carrie Walker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Carrie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you’ve thought about whether to sign with an agent or manager?
I have been blessed with an experienced, calm and knowledgeable agent, who really watches out for his authors, Tim Beals. It’s a funny story, how I connected with him. Once I had written my first manuscript, I began searching for an agent. I sent queries, oh so many queries. Conferences? Oh, they were my home away from home. Not only were they great opportunities to better my craft, but also often provided opportunities to pitch to agents. And did I learn to pitch! I went to so many conferences, virtual and in person and pitched to so many agents. I met a number of lovely agents, a number of whom showed interest in my work, but for some time, hadn’t found the right one yet. And then, God laughed at me. After travelling and trying so hard to seek out the right agent, I found mine without even signing up for a pitch. I attended a local conference, not far from home. It was a smaller conference that had a teen track which I took my daughter too. It was a fun mother/daughter weekend, where we could share interests and get away. While I was learning my craft, I wasn’t super worried about all the other writing stuff. Enter divine providence. I showed up to a class that my agent was teaching a few minutes early and we struck up a conversation. He asked about my writing, and before I knew it he was asking me to submit to him! The more I looked into him and his agency, I was so impressed with their work, focus on authors and model. I knew my work would be in good hands. They loved that I already had a series written, along with a number of writing awards, and drive to promote my work. In a few short weeks, I had signed with his agency and the rest is history.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I write romantic women’s fiction for the Christian Market, however I try to make my stories appeal to a wider audience that enjoy inspirational themes. I’ve always been a reader, and enjoy a story with a good message, and of course romance. I never thought I’d write, but then a story was placed in my heart and after a lot of learning and work “Emma’s Hero” found it’s way to the world. Some of the things I’ve been most proud of in my work are winning the Reader’s Choice Award for Faith Hope and Love Christian Fiction Writers and placing as a silver medalist in the Selah Awards. Both awards I have often looked to for my next read, and to have my debut novel place and win was a dream come true.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The opportunity to touch a readers heart, perhaps help heal a wound or merely offer an escape with story.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My first novel, “Emma’s Hero,” I literally rewrote three times. When I first drafted the novel it was because the story wouldn’t let me go, but I had a lot to learn about writing novels lol My second rework of the story came after I had attended a number of seminars and got a lot of feedback. After all that work, the idea of touching that book again did not sound appealing (it’s a 300 page book!), but another publisher showed interest and I felt that this story needed a home. So, I pulled up my boostraps and dug in, again, doing yet another major rework on the story. This one, ultimately, being the final. It takes a lot of resilence to keep working at something so time consuming, while often getting negative feedback and no guarentee in the final result.
