We recently connected with Caroline Eaton Pickard and have shared our conversation below.
Caroline, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
A few years ago, I made a major pivot and started my career as an actor and comedy writer. I met an amazing creative partner and co-created a web series with her. We wanted to create a project that we could both star in and would show off our comedy chops, and I’m really proud of how it turned out! It’s called Woo Mates, and it’s about two woo-woo roommates who have a toxic relationship.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I graduated college with a degree in journalism and have been a full-time freelance writer, editor, and digital marketer for several years. However, I always felt a pull towards acting. I grew up in theatre and dance and always loved performing, but I didn’t see it as a viable career option. A few years ago I moved out of the country and finally gave myself permission to pursue acting. I trained extensively while I was away, began auditioning for films and TV shows, and started writing and producing my own projects. Now that I’m settled back in Texas I’m looking forward to pursuing acting and comedy writing again. I still have my day job as a freelancer and appreciate the flexibility it provides me to pursue my creative goals. I love helping my clients gain more visibility and using storytelling to carefully craft their messages.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Supporting an artist’s work can go a long way. When we were creating our web series, my creative partner and I launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for the budget. I was nervous about how it would go, and I don’t enjoy asking people for money, but we ended up meeting our goal. It was so overwhelming to watch friends and family members from various stages of my life – some I hadn’t spoken to in years – contribute to something I was creating.
The campaign was also great for the project because it gave us a built-in fan base before we even made the full web series. Good art takes time to create, which is easy to forget in our world of AI-generated images and 7-second Instagram reels. The fact that people saw value in what we were creating and were in it for the long haul with us is so special, and I hope it was a rewarding experience for them to see the final product.
I’m so appreciative of everyone who contributed to the campaign, and I would encourage others to do the same if given the opportunity. Even a small amount is helpful and meaningful to creators. If you can’t contribute financially, supporting a project on social media also makes a huge difference. Lastly, it’s always special when people genuinely engage with what I create. It means the world to me when someone tells me they watched Woo Mates and loved it, or better yet, quote their favorite lines to me.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love the collaborative process. To me, creating with other people is so much better than creating on your own, especially with comedy. You can bounce your ideas off each other and take them to the next level. Jokes get funnier and the entire project benefits from the collaboration.
