Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Caprisha Daniels. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Caprisha, appreciate you joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
I’ve been in this industry now for over 20 years. I started out as a braider. I was introduced to the world of Natural Hair Care when I lived in Atlanta, Georgia for 11 years. I started working in my 1st salon in 2008 as the braider. It inspired me to go Natural myself, meaning no more chemicals that would straighten my hair. Fast forward to 2010 when I moved back to California. The natural hair movement wasn’t as prominent like it was in the South. I was still Natural but mostly wearing extensions. I noticed when I would wear extensions, my husband didn’t say much about my new styles. I mentioned this to him one day. I said “babe I notice when I wear extensions you don’t say much BUT when I wear my OWN hair you always compliment my new look, even if it’s just in an afro. Why is that? He said because I LOVE your natural self. Lovingyournaturalself Natural Hair Care and Hair loss Center was established 2014

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My original plan was to become a Traveling Nurse. I’ve always loved the medical field and helping others and making them feel better about themselves. I became a Phlebotomist for 3 years. I always did various styles on my own hair and got alot of compliments. I started building clientele on the side. I just wasn’t confident enough to make Cosmetology my full time career.. I took a leap of faith and just went for it. Let’s see what happens right!? I realized that I was STILL making people feel good and better about themselves. I was still able to give clients that nurturing feeling like I was doing in the medical field, but this just felt better and fun! Specializing in all types of Locs, Braids, Twists and more. Lovingyournaturalself is now the ONLY full service salon specializing in Natural Hair Care in downtown Bakersfield, California. I also travel to surrounding cities in California. The products used are all natural and our own
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy I’ve learned from growing my clientele in the hair industry is that you are your own model. If your hair looks good(I don’t care if it’s a neat ponytail) people will ask “who did your hair?” What salon did you go to? My answer was always ME. I was building clientele when there was no social media. Always keeping my business cards on me. Always taking pictures of my work and keeping a portfolio to show my work and my actual clients. People want to see this! It builds trust. Now of course we have Social media which is an awesome platform now to gain clientele. I’ve learned that word of mouth still exists. Everyone doesn’t have Social media. Word of mouth is not dead!

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Consistency helped me build my reputation within this market. Often times I get the “emergency” hair stylists calls where a person had an appointment with another stylist, they have an event and the stylist didn’t show up, didn’t call or canceled at the last minute. Now yes some things are out of our control BUT Consistency is the key. Not only consistent with timing but Styling as well. It gains your client’s trust and let’s them see the passion you truly have for your career
