Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Candace Amos . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Candace thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
I currently manage my social media and that of the Los Angeles Times where I serve as the Deputy Editor of Social Media.
Candace, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a journalist and social media strategist with an extreme passion for helping corporate professionals empower their personal brands. I have been in the media space for 15 years. Some of the companies I’ve had the pleasure of working with include the New York Post, Us Weekly, New York Daily News, The Daily Beast, and the Los Angeles Times. In all of these work experiences, I’ve come in contact with talented professionals who bury their drive behind the names of the companies they represent. I found this to be a dangerous practice when I was laid off from my first managerial social media role in 2015 and had to scramble to find a new opportunity due to the fact that no one knew me. Since then, I’ve worked with executives and founders to help them showcase the best facets of who they are without relying on the big company name. I’m most proud of the transformation that comes with helping my clients demystify the content creation process and teaching them how to sell themselves online. I want my audience to know that building a brand is a process that will pay off huge dividends by remaining confident and consistent.

Any advice for managing a team?
I have had the privilege of being in management since 2015. The best advice I have is that managers should understand the company’s goals must align with the needs of their team members. Managers are able to achieve this by being great communicators and working to make each member feel empowered. The goal is to always stay ahead of potential turnover, burnout, and overwhelm and it’s best achieved by prioritizing their goals.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Yes – private career networks. I’m in a few on Slack and also Facebook. They have changed my life. Networking is the true key to success. To get good at it, you have to be authentic and give more than you take.
