We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bryan Talbot. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bryan below.
Bryan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I founded West Coast Wing Chun in 2010 to share the knowledge and passion for Ip Man Wing Chun that I learned from my teacher, Sifu Samuel Kwok, with a wider audience. I had been teaching Wing Chun since the early 1990s but wanted to create a unified organization that would promote the traditional values and principles of the art. I also wanted to ensure that my students had access to the most up-to-date training methods and techniques, which I developed through my ongoing study and research of Wing Chun.
Aside from my passion for Wing Chun, I was also motivated by a desire to provide a positive and supportive community for my students. I wanted to create an environment where students could learn and grow together, and where they could develop not only their martial arts skills but also their character and personal development.
Overall, I founded West Coast Wing Chun out of a passion for the art and a desire to share it with others, as well as a commitment to preserving its traditional values and principles and fostering a positive and supportive community for my students.
Wing Chun Boot Camp:
The Wing Chun Boot Camp came from my desire to create a unique and immersive training experience for students. I wanted to provide a focused and intensive training program that would allow students to fully immerse themselves in the art of Wing Chun and make significant progress in a short amount of time.
I also wanted to create an opportunity for students to train with other experienced Wing Chun practitioners and instructors, including my colleague Sifu Kim Squiers. By bringing together a diverse group of instructors and students, I hoped to create a collaborative and supportive learning environment where everyone could benefit from each other’s experience and expertise.
To make the Wing Chun Boot Camp a reality, I spent months planning and organizing the event, securing a venue, and coordinating with the other instructors. I also developed a comprehensive training program that covered all aspects of Wing Chun, from forms and techniques to sparring and self-defense.
Overall, the Wing Chun Boot Camp was a way for me to share my passion for Wing Chun with others and provide a unique and rewarding training experience for all students.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started learning Wing Chun in the late 1980s, after being introduced to the art by a friend. I was immediately drawn to the practicality and effectiveness of Wing Chun, as well as its focus on efficiency and economy of motion.
After many years of training and teaching Wing Chun, I founded West Coast Wing Chun in 2010 to promote and preserve the traditional values and principles of the art. Today, West Coast Wing Chun provides a wide range of products and services to students and practitioners of all levels, including:
Group classes: We offer group classes for students of all levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners. Our classes cover all aspects of Wing Chun, including forms, techniques, sparring, self-defense, and traditional weapons.
Private lessons: We also offer private lessons for students who want personalized instruction and attention. Private lessons allow students to focus on specific areas of their training and progress at their own pace.
Seminars and workshops: We regularly host seminars and workshops with guest instructors and experts in Wing Chun and related martial arts. These events provide students with the opportunity to learn from a variety of perspectives and deepen their understanding of the art.
Online training: We offer online training programs for students who are unable to attend our in-person classes or who want to supplement their training with additional resources. Our online programs include instructional videos, training guides, and interactive coaching.
At West Coast Wing Chun, our goal is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and support they need to achieve their goals and reach their full potential as martial artists. We strive to create a positive and supportive community where students can learn and grow together, and where they can develop not only their martial arts skills but also their character and personal development.
Overall, West Coast Wing Chun solves the problems of students who want to learn and practice Wing Chun in a supportive and structured environment, with access to experienced instructors, comprehensive training programs, and a community of like-minded practitioners.

Have you ever had to pivot?
Certainly! When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, West Coast Wing Chun had to pivot quickly to adapt to the new reality. My partner, Sifu Kim Squiers, and I realized early on that it would be difficult to keep our students safe and maintain the same level of training quality in our physical locations. We also foresaw that the pandemic would likely last for an extended period of time, making it necessary to find a long-term solution.
To address these challenges, we decided to transition our martial arts school to an online format before the governor of California mandated the closure of non-essential businesses. We brought together all four of our locations, including San Diego, Utah, and Texas, in an online format with all the instructors from each location taking responsibility.
This was a significant undertaking, as we had to quickly develop and implement a comprehensive online training program that could provide the same level of instruction and support as our in-person classes. We created a unified, family environment that helped keep students training and provided a positive outlet during a very trying time.
Our online training program included instructional videos, live-streamed classes, and interactive coaching and feedback. We also provided students with personalized training plans and regular check-ins to ensure that they were making progress and staying motivated.
Overall, our pivot to online training was a necessary step to keep our students safe and maintain the quality of our instruction during a challenging time. It also allowed us to bring together our different locations and create a unified community that supported each other through the pandemic. The experience for everyone was extremely positive during very uncertain times, in fact so much so that we have continued to utilize online access as a supplemental training method presently in all our schools.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Simply put. Being well organized, consistent, and ALWAYS putting the customer/student first. Let’s face it, martial arts can carry a great deal of ego in it. This is a pitfall that is easy to slip into. Many martial arts instructors and business owners have fallen victim to making the business about themselves. A good question to ask one’s self is “What is the experience we are presenting?” “Who is it for?” We as an organization feel it is important that the student/customer feels a sense of caring and value that is genuine. In today’s transparent digital market, your reputation is as valuable as any profit you could possibly gain.
