We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brooke Embry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brooke , appreciate you joining us today. It’s easy to look at a business or industry as an outsider and assume it’s super profitable – but we’ve seen over and over again in our conversation with folks that most industries have factors that make profitability a challenge. What’s biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
The biggest challenge to profitability in our industry is hobbyist photographers who operate illegally. We all have to start somewhere! But being that this industry isn’t regulated, any person at any time can purchase a camera, charge $50 and start taking photographs. Oftentimes, these hobbyists are not licensed, insured, paying taxes and are operating illegally. The Portrait industry is becoming watered down by this which affects the true professionals who have spent decades, or more, training and investing into their legal businesses.

I am a fine art maternity and newborn portrait photographer. Our studio provides a full service experience for each client, leaving them not only with beautiful portraits, but beautiful heirloom printed products as well from all around the world. With over a decade in the portrait industry, and a 5-star review across all platforms, we pride ourselves on the customer experience that we provide to every one who chooses us to capture such a monumental moment in their life.
By providing a client closet for our moms, all props and accessories for baby, and a clothing guide to cover all other participants, we make sure our clients are well prepared and feeling confident when it comes time to step in front of the camera.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Providing an amazing client experience for each and every person. No one is treated differently for any reason whatsoever and we keep in regular contact with all clients who always know they can reach out to us at any time, with any questions, and will never be forgotten or ignored! Each client is special in their own way, and we make sure they feel that through our services and time spent together!
