We were lucky to catch up with Brittani Morganfield recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittani, thanks for joining us today. Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
I try to take vacations whenever I can. I find myself needing a change of scenery after working at home for extended periods of time. I do it to either clear my mind to help me work better or if I’m feeling spontaneous! Even if my travels involve work, it helps to change my environment every once in a while to keep myself from feeling burnt out and exhausted from working long hours during the week.
It‘s usually pretty hard to go on vacation away from your business, especially if you’re working on your business alone and have gotten into a routine of working consistently. Trust me, your mind and body will appreciate it, and your work will be better after allowing yourself to relax! You work hard, and you deserve some play time!
Brittani, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a Brand & Web Designer and Social Media Manager from Memphis! I’ve been designing since elementary school, but I started doing it professionally in 2018. I grew up designing websites on Weebly in my elementary school’s computer lab, creating fake fashion magazines, and even making fashion boards on the fashion platform Polyvore! I want to say my talent for the creative projects I used to do came naturally. It was very easy for me. Those are only a few things I got into, but I’ve always had the creative bug and knew I’d do creative work when I got older, so I’m thankful to be living my childhood dream.
Brittani Social is a design & social media studio I started in December 2020! I had been designing professionally for two years and realized I could do more with my skills and passion. My goal was to help the innovators and storytellers of the world with visuals that set them apart from their peers. And I do that through brand & website design, graphics, and social media projects. With my business, I make it a point to provide a service and experience that my clients or potential clients will remember. Whether that’s during the discovery call or as we’re going through a project together, and that’s something I’m really proud of.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I took a break from accepting new clients and posting for Brittani Social in January of 2022 and made a comeback in August after an internship I had that summer. When I started posting on Instagram again, I noticed how many new designers had popped up, how many followers they had gained in a short time, and how much they were charging despite being new to the design world. It made me question myself a lot. I doubted my prices and my skills, and I realized I was starting to not enjoy being in that space. It felt like a chore, and it was hard to show up for my business. It’s part imposter syndrome and part how social media and numbers can make us doubt ourselves, and I don’t think people talk about that enough in the design space.
I had to remind myself of everything I’ve done in my life, I had to remind myself that I am talented and I deserve to be in these spaces. I deserve to be here, and being here shows other people who look like me that they can do it too because the design space can be very white-dominated sometimes.
I refused to allow imposter syndrome to stop me from growing and achieving the goals I’d set for myself to come back from my hiatus. I had to show up as my most authentic self and only focus on what I was doing like I’d done before. Since then, things have looked up, and I not only find joy in being in these spaces and showing up for myself and my business but I’ve been presented with a lot of opportunities because of that choice to be resilient.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Right now, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is seeing the people in my life turn to me because they want to make their craft their career. It makes me feel good to know that people trust me enough to ask for advice and trust that I can help them achieve their goals, especially since I’m still growing too.
I think another thing that makes it even more impactful is that I don’t know anyone in my life who does what I do that I could look to for guidance! I’m self-taught and the first in my family to do this, so I didn’t have anyone to ask for advice about becoming a designer or working in social media. I just started doing it one day when I was younger and kept doing it because it was fun, and I grew a passion for it.
