Today we’d like to introduce you to Britta Merwin
Hi Britta, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
From the beginning I was a weather nut. I was born in Texas but raised in Colorado surrounded by fascinating weather. I was the girl that loved Barbie’s dreamboat but also had one goal; sail Barbie down the storm drain in the wake of any thunderstorm. I honestly just wanted to know why and how… how is it possible for it to be warm and sunny in the 70s one day and be surrounded by snow in less than 36 hours. My journey of finding out ‘why’ was sparked and as I grew up the journey to ‘why’ turned into a mission to help keep people safe by showing them the ‘why’. I started my TV career on a rare and unique path finding myself as the morning meteorologist on the CNBC program Squawk Box when I was only 24 and now 16 years later, I’m back on national broadcast with Fox Weather thankful for the experiences I have had along the way.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has felt smooth but perhaps because I never questioned that this was where I belonged. I took three years out of the business to support my husband who was serving in the United States Coast Guard and that is when we started our family. It is an important part of my story and one that I’m thankful for. Many spouses lose their careers supporting their loved one in the military. I find myself lucky that I was able to come back to my career and want to continue to support military spouses as they navigate their critically important role to their family and country finding what is best for them and their journey.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What should people know about Fox Weather? We are here for America and here to stay. Every month we are found on a new platform and grow our reach. Although we shine every day I think we are the most brilliant during natural disasters. We are there before, during and after the storm giving the viewer a front row seat. Our partnership with storm chasers provides a unique perspective that I would have loved to experience when I was first learning about meteorology. Not only are the images captivating but the advance warning we are providing can be life saving. The part of the story I am most proud of is the after. The brightest times come from the darkest of moments and at Fox Weather we are committed to the communities we cover. I think of Rolling Fork, MS ripped apart by an EF4 tornado. Over a year later we are still telling their story, showing their progress to keep their town name known helping more support to continue to come in and help them rebuild.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
AI will be an interesting player. In some ways artificial intelligence as been a part of the weather biz for a long time with computer models and forecasts but as we move forward it will be interesting to see how it adds to our coverage. No matter what I always see the human element staying at the front of weather coverage. Weather impacts us all and with our changing climate that becomes more and more true for Americans. When disaster strikes you want someone you trust to walk you through and Fox Weather will always be here to do hold America’s hand.
