We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brigham Blackham. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brigham below.
Brigham, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Some of the most interesting parts of our journey emerge from areas where we believe something that most people in our industry do not – do you have something like that?
Most coachs, speaker and edu-preneurs are focused on selling the dream wealth, health and lifestyle but neglect to see how intense griding impacts the family.
For two years I lived in Taiwan as a full-time missionary. I saw all sides of success and failure in families. One quote was almost a rallying cry for fathers to focus on their families still hits me hard. I first saw the quote on bumper stickers, & plastered on scriptures, bikes, posters and all over the church. It is by President David O. McKay ,”No other success can compensate for failure in the home”.
I’ve seen so many men trade their hopes and dreams for a success that is defined by others instead of themselves.
I help boss dad speakers & authors who feel crippled by overwhelm, stage fright & imposter syndrome get hyper focused & gain competence performing their success story as they create it. Don’t give up your family for success you can have both but if you only focus on your career you probably won’t have a family at the top.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn was that I need to become irreplaceable.
In the theatre world every role is a crucial to the overall production’s success. I had had many times in my life where I was a leading role in a play or musical and felt like I was irreplaceable. In one such production in college I truly didn’t have an understudy and I reveled in the added income from being the one and only person who could perform my role in Damn Yankees. My first professional role was an absolute treasured memory. I realized very quickly that many of the other professional actors in the production were double cast. This was foreign to me because I was so used to college productions which usually had an understudy or swing but were almost never deployed to perform.
In a long run of a show there are certain moments where you sometimes are a little under the weather or you are low on energy from a long day. Maybe it is your third show of the day and you have already completed two amazing matinees. You have a decision to make are you going to show up and have the show go on or are you going to phone it in?
One occasion early in the run of Damn Yankees we had a grueling day where we had not only a three performance run but i had school work and pressures of the world started to weigh down on me. I had a cast member who is now a dear friend Daniel Hess instill a drive in me with one simple idea, He said something like, ‘for most of our audience this will be their one and only chance to experience this production. Many it will be their first show here and if you are tired or feel like you are not able to go on stop doing it for yourself. ‘ And here is the moment that changed everything he said, ” Give a gift to your audience”.
It was like a little shot of 5 hr. energy in my veins, because I didn’t complain I just fulfilled my role and performed the best I could. this is a turning point in how I saw myself because when there is nobody else that can do your job and fulfill your role you need to step up through obligation. I chose to serve and perform my best I could.
I realized that in business there are many roles that because a company is small you will need to fulfill. In my short term rental business I have experienced many times where I needed to step in and fulfill the roles needed. Delegating isn’t always possible in the beginning but when you assign a role that is important and someone has ownership over it they will be obligated to do the best they can when they are inspired not bossed around.
Since that first experience as a single cast performer, I always marked on my audition sheet that I prefer to have been double cast. The role is needed but I had to suck up my ego at times to realize that that role didn’t always need to be me. there is more flexibility in your schedule if you can have a double but it isn’t always able to happen. In business if you don’t have your role written down as clear SOPs then you will be the Solopreneur who is stuck performing those tasks even on your worst days. Unfortunately that is how many businesses work. Many never get past the single pinch point of a disorganized solopreneur with them as their processes.
So what can you do if that is you?
Keep a notepad by you and block out the role and script our your processes and procedures. Your standard operating procedures will start to come into a system as you write down and always improve upon your processes.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I haven’t always been starving for wisdom but I learned early on that Leaders are readers. I love online courses, mentors & coaches. I truly believe that applied knowledge is essential to effectively leverage all other currencies of life. For example Our lives’ currencies are comprised of 5 things, according to The Final Percent network, Time, Energy, Money, People And Knowledge. It is only by applying specialized knowledge with specific means that you are able to deepen your relationship with all the other currencies. So for me The TFP Totality App has been a phenomenal resource. It has provided me with access to timeless principles and a community following this holistic approach to life. I love how interconnected our personal, community, vitality and professional lives are. This is my favorite resources and it is one I come back to over and over, the bite sized content is uplifting and family centric.
If it is a matter of resources for spiritual growth nothing has helped me more than the Book of Mormon. Whether you are a Christian or Not that book of scritpure is brim full of useful stories, insights and inspiration to tap into a higher power
