Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Breona Wilson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Breona, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I first noticed I had a drive for modeling after I got discovered at 13 by a vogue model, being a nervous teen I wasn’t sure I had the confidence to pursue such a big field with such such expectations, competition and drive. But once I began training, getting in magazines, runway shows etc. I began to realize something awoke in Me that made me feel alive, happy and worth living for.
Breona, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
A Vogue model discovered me at the age of 13, and my life has been an adventure ever since! Looking back at my career over the last decade and more, I have been very fortunate to have opportunities I wouldn’t have dreamed were possible.
Compared to my fellow modeling peers, I have always been short. Standing at a tall and proud 5′ 4″ (and a half!!), rather than view this as a weakness, I have chosen to make it my strength. It took time for others in this industry to share my attitude, but once they experienced my contagious energy and self-love, doors gradually opened for me. Since then, I have had the opportunity to travel, be featured on magazine covers, and meet all kinds of wonderful fellow creators in this diverse industry.
I am proud of many accomplishments throughout my years, but I am most proud of my willingness to stand up for my beauty exactly as I am. I wear my natural Black hair with pride. I don’t listen to the voices telling me I am not tall enough, pretty enough, or that I just don’t have what it takes. I do have what it takes, and I will continue to stand and represent women around the world who might not fit perfectly into today’s overly restrictive standards of beauty. Everyone has beauty, and sometimes all we need to do is find it within ourselves and wear it with pride.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I find many aspects of creating art rewarding, but perhaps the most rewarding piece is proving to myself that I can do incredible things. Often times we see the art of world class creators and think, “Wow, I don’t know if I could ever do something like that!” But it feels really good to walk away from your own shoot having given your all and eventually seeing that you can do amazing things as well.
Also, I am excited to leave behind a record of my work for my future children!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As a child, my parents frequently belittled my siblings and me. They would call us all kinds of names and tell us we were too fat to be beautiful. In a way, I think this was part of the fuel that drove me to excel in modeling. I wanted my parents to know that their words didn’t have power over me and who I chose to be.
