We recently connected with Brendan Krake and have shared our conversation below.
Brendan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I’ve learned a lot since moving to Nashville, from starting college to then dropping out of college and deciding to really pursue the dream I’ve had since i was a little kid. It’s been a weird two years full of a lot of my favorite memories. I feel like I’ve grown up a lot, especially when it comes to my writing. I’ve had the opportunity to meet dozens of really talented other creatives and have gotten to work with a good many of what I expect to be the next generation of songwriters and artists in this town. And I think the more people I’ve met, the more stories I’ve heard, and songs I’ve written, the more clear it’s become to me that there really isn’t one way to do things when it comes to music. And as for me I’ve never been real good at fitting into boxes, and I think that is evident in my writing style and process, but seeing how everyone has their own quirks and ideas has been really inspiring and reassuring to me that I’m not doing it wrong.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a Singer Songwriter, originally from a small town called Oswego In Illinois. I write music somewhere in between Country, Folk and Pop. And It’s been my dream to be a singer since I was a little kid. It sometimes still seems crazy to me that I’m actually here, living in Nashville, The City Of Music! I never would’ve imagined actually ending up here. When it comes to motivation my faith is a big part of that for me. I believe we all are given gifts from God and we are meant to use those gifts for good. I don’t necessarily write all “Christian” music but being a Christian has a large influence on my worldview and that definitely impacts what I write about and how I write it. I believe we are called to be Salt and Light in a world drowning in darkness and I hope that my music can help people and be that light for somebody, even if its just one person.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Seeing things come together is definitely the most rewarding thing for me as an artist and a songwriter. Hearing all the parts playing off of eachother for the first time after arranging a new song, seeing the expressions of an audience as they feel the emotions with you, and seeing people come together over music is just beautiful. Creating something out of nothing is a surreal experience, it really rewarding when it all comes together and you can really appreciate the work as a whole.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I thought I had to write like everybody else. I thought when I was new at the whole songwriting thing that because something sounded different it was bad and I’ve since learned that the differences can sometimes be a song’s greatest strength.
