We recently connected with Bree Angela and have shared our conversation below.
Bree, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
My story on how I got to where I am and where I hope to go creatively has always been fueled by risk taking. While growing up, my grandfather made sure to show us photo slides and albums of relatives from his side as well as my grandmother’s after Sunday dinner. This always fascinated me! There were so many stories passed down about the entrepreneurial spirit of those who had arrived in America before us. I thought they were so brave and took such a risk to come to this country and to work in NYC. Some were businessmen, some were boxers, some were seamstresses, some opened their own hardware stores. Some scored high on the Mensa IQ test, some mingled with Charles Ritz and, to my heart’s delight, some were Artists! I will always remember the stories of my Great Aunt and Uncle that published their illustrations in Harper’s Bazaar. That sparked such inspiration in me as a young artist! I felt such pride and connection to my lineage! However, as I grew up I also witnessed several incredibly talented family members that I loved never really reach their creative potentials due to their circumstance in life. I thought to myself that I could not let this happen to me. I would die trying to have my talent be seen. I would reach for the stars like the generations that came before me. My courage and continued risk taking throughout my life has helped me to explore so many different areas of art and fashion. My experiences and connections are in place because I was not afraid to network and try new things with endless dedication to the work. I honor my family in continuing to take risks each day as I push my dreams further.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I create imaginative tactile experiences with my love for art and textiles. For the past 12 years, I have been involved with several museums across the country in making interactive exhibits and play spaces. My work includes costumes, toys, puppets, soft sculptures, and many other tactile design elements made from fibers, beads, and more that invite people from all ages to touch and interact within museums. I am very proud to have been part of establishing international recognition for the Denver Art Museum, in particular, for their interactive and hands on approach in exhibit design and family spaces. It is my goal to use my creative abilities to make learning fun. “We learn as we play. Most importantly, in play we learn how to learn.”
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
This world can create such stress and anxiety, especially for kids. It is my mission to provide spaces that invite a sense of play and wonder. I want to let kids have a space where they can be loud, run around, and explore their imaginations. My goal is to make designs that inspire and remind us to play and dream big.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
What is most rewarding to me is sharing my knowledge of creativity and the art industry with the younger generation. I often involve myself in Art Outreach initiatives wherever I go. It is important to me that others know the significance of being creative. My own creativity has helped me to move through many hard times. It has provided me with an income and the ability to have a flexible schedule to be able to go out on daily adventures and to travel when I want. Being an artist definitely has it’s ups and downs, but I am 100% certain the creatives will help to change this world for the better. So, I love the idea that my own experience as a creative artist can be inspiration to others to reach for their own creative potential and to possibly create the ripple effect of a better world for the future.
