We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brandon Small. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brandon below.
Hi Brandon, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The concept of Realtyless was born from a desire to directly improve the issues I experienced when selling a home.
I spent months going through the real estate process with my parents so they could relocate to Knoxville, TN for retirement. The entire process was emotional and grueling. From preparing for handfuls of showings to dealing with closing hiccups, I saw firsthand the inefficacies in the real estate system. Because of the structure of the current system, my parents found themselves reacting to every issue rather than having a plan in place with facts to support their decision. With my parent’s largest asset being sold and their retirement on the horizon, I knew there had to be a better way to real estate.
I explained the idea of Realtyless to friends and family and found many people around me had experienced the same issues and believed in the concept as much as I did. We assembled an outstanding team and spent over a year conducting research, meeting with key professionals, and designing a platform that answered all the major inefficiencies in the current system. Then, we began building, custom coding, and marketing Realtyless.
The amount of time and energy that has gone into bringing this idea to reality has been more intense than any of us could have imagined. There are days where I feel confident and days where I question the choices I’ve made. But on days that are hard, I go back to the fact that Realtyless solves a major problem in the real estate market that no other company is solving in the same way. I am rem

Brandon, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi, my name is Brandon. I’m a chemical engineer by training but have worked in online marketing, web development, and real estate development for the past 10 years. I am a co-founder of Realtyless.
Did you know the United States has one of the highest real estate commission percentages in the world? Buyers and sellers in the United States are losing an average of 6% of their equity in their home when they buy or sell. Everyone wants to save money on their home but most of us are afraid of the complexity and dollar value of the transaction. Real estate agents are very expensive and traditional for sale by owner is full of fear, uncertainty, and doubt. Realtyless is our solution to the gap between the high cost of an agent and the fear of for sale by owner. Realtyless is a premium real estate marketplace that provides professional guidance, quality, transparency, and trust for a fraction of the cost of an agent. We offer everyone confidence in the sale and purchase of their home and help them build equity through zero commission. That means buyers and sellers save a total of almost $26,000 on a median home in the United States. That money helps Realtyless buyers and sellers build more equity in their homes and purchase and save for things that really matter to them like college tuition, home renovations, more family time and memories, a new car, or a once in a lifetime vacation.

How’d you meet your business partner?
I co-founded Realtyless with my siblings Ryan Small and Mariel Small. It was an exciting and scary time going through the process of engineering the flow of the platform and building out the backend. I was passionate about what I was building and talked about the company and the progress constantly. My brother and sister shared the same belief in the future of Realtyless and passion for creating a better way to real estate. We didn’t always get along growing up; we all have very different skill sets and personalities. But we’ve found these differences complement each other nicely as they’re brought around the unifying passion of Realtyless. We make a great team and couldn’t be better co-founders and friends.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I am eternally grateful for the help and support I’ve received from the Knoxville Entrepreneurship Center. Realtyless was a finalist in the KEC’s startup pitch competition “What’s the Big Idea” as well as their 3-month startup accelerator “The Works”. Both these programs have helped us pivot our marketing, target audience, and general path forward. Through these experiences, we’ve also formed strong connections and friendships with the Knoxville entrepreneurship community which has meant so much to our team in both moments of success and pivots.
