We recently connected with Bobbie Mack and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Bobbie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
There are several things we would do differently if we were to start over again, We would invest in good mentorship and consultants in the restaurant field.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Our names are Bobby and Bobbie Mack we were born and raised in Austin, TX from very humble beginnings. We both actually worked in restaurants through our teenage years. We then went on to work in careers for over 20+ years in healthcare compliance and welding. There were several reasons we ended up getting into the restaurant space, #1 was a conversation at the lunch table and #2 was so that Bobby could spend less time away from home on the road traveling for work, where he would often be gone months at a time #3 was Bobbys love for BBQ’ing. As a journeyman welder for the Union, there would be lots of conversations around the lunch table,
one day, while eating lunch, he started thinking, “If there were just a well-loaded stuffed potato with all the fixings close by that would hit the spot!” That idea at the lunch table was the beginning, and in 2016 Bobby formed TaterQue. We got the formation papers and that was all fuel Bobby needed to keep the idea alive, and in 2020 in spite of the Covid pandemic we were finally ready to take the leap of faith and commit to investing money and time into building the business.

Has your business ever had a near-death moment? Would you mind sharing the story?
There was a time when our business bank account was nearly over drafted, we dealt with a Point-of-Sale company and salesman that ended up being shady and although we only had 1 food truck he put 5 stores under our name which caused us to have an enormous amount of fees. We were completed unaware, of what he had done, and had to move mountains to get money in the account to cover expenses, we had to get the police involved and fight tirelessly on the phone with them to get our money back.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson we had to unlearn was being open to the ability to take the advice, we both had to grow up really fast due to our environments and households we lived in as a child, so due to a lack of being able to trust some of the adults that should care for you, it was hard for us to take advice. from most people because we didn’t always know when they truly had our best interest at heart. We had to learn that GOD will bring people to assist and guide you and he will also show you signs of when the guidance is not genuine. It helped us to be more open to feedback and advise form others which has been beneficial to our personal growth and business.
