We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Billiejo Hudson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Billiejo, thanks for joining us today. It’s easy to look at a business or industry as an outsider and assume it’s super profitable – but we’ve seen over and over again in our conversation with folks that most industries have factors that make profitability a challenge. What’s biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
It takes money to make money. Don’t think you can just buy a cheap dog, breed them together and boom, you’re rich! That’s not how it works. A lot of time ,money, and research goes into this.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up always wanting to work with animals and ended up starting out with the medical field as my family couldn’t afford vet school. I got my first English Bulldog in 2016 and I never looked back. I absolutely loved the breed and started doing research to become a reputable and knowledgeable breeder. I worked with a mentor to obtain all information and hands-on experience for about 4 years. I finally started to offer my Whelping service to reputable breeders in the state of Texas and work along side many top breeders in the state to provide healthy and happy puppies. I offer hands on services, emergency care and training.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I invested all residual income and and went full into breedings including stud fees and quality females as well as state of the art equipment for proper care. I reinvest most of my money back into my Whelping business to provide exceptional care to all clients to the best of my ability.
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
I fight this daily! With all the marketing you can do you still are fighting the odds. You see a post for someone looking for puppies, you comment and bam, there’s 300 comments for the same puppy. People jump into this thinking it’s a quick dollar to be made, which in turn is actually flooding the market making it harder and harder to make the sale. The one thing I can say is that pictures are everything. I whelped a litter and had them for 7 weeks & off one set of pictures was able to sell 5/7 in the same day.
