We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Big Berry. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Big below.
Big, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I first knew that I wanted to do music kind of my whole life, my mom use to rap when she was my age and I also grew up watching my uncle perform at the local parks here in Detroit when I was a teenager. Also there are some other musicians in my family that kind of encouraged the dream. However it really just that I have a story too tell and already a very vocal person, so this just let me get creative as I can get and get some things off my chest at the same time. More like diary vibes, just get too let it out. As far as graphics its pretty much the same just something that i use to drown myself from the real world. And i just like to do it makes me feels good and relaxes my mind.

Big, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started doing music in 2018 but in 2020 I would say, thats when I took it serious and spend my first dollar on purchasing a beat and doing the business part the correct way and that was kind of when people started taking me more serious too. Especially my friends and family they seen that was falling in love with it and after i build me a studio alot of people came in board and wanted to help me more after i invested time and money into my own career.
I just believe in working hard, that’s all I preach that’s all people see me do is work hard before my mother passed. My goal was to get her a great big house somewhere and ro just see her smile so i have used the things around me that i love to try and accomplish that personal goal that fuels me and most men from where im from to be honest, we all just wanna get our moma out the ghetto
My mom passed away last summer in may, i feel kinds lost now but i can say im ready…. for what I DO NOT KNOW but me pushing my music career and my Buisness is definitely never going to stopped, its helpimg me jot think on things too much and allow me to express it in a positive way,,,,,,since then i have graduated from college again with my Master’s Degree In Rehabilitation Counseling and i now work at a k-8 school in Detroit and coaching the boys varsity there too,…… so yea thats my 9-5 alos all this is after i get home, i shoot for my dreams,I have also started a record label “THA PAKK EMPIRE LLC.” We have 6 artists on our record label, 2 photographers, a podcast a clothing line (PAKKLIFE STREET WEAR) and ambassadors and if you follow our instagram page @pakklifemusicofficial you will see all of our latest work and projects and events. Especially the local detroit artist im currently working with around 30-40 artists now with graphics ans merch creation.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Something that is hard to understand for creators is sometimes you have to sneak your way in, and what i mean by that is some things are going to have to be free, sometimes as a graphic designer, you’re going to have to make free revisions, people not liking the work, and wanting their money back, people wanting things back the same day, and not understanding that you have to be creative, all those are things that you really can’t explain to someone until you actually go through it, I highly dislike, doing free work however, it is times that I feel like I could benefit from doing something for someone just for the opportunity of being seen on their platform, and that goes for music, DJs, be makers, producers, engineers, and graphic designers, etc. You have to be willing to understand that sometimes the moment isn’t for you. It may be for a year from now even two years from now, so somethings were not going your favor at the moment

Have you ever had to pivot?
A time where I had to make a pivot in my career was when I decided to start a record label. I had to kind of put myself as a artist to the side and kind of build a brand making it not about me, but about the label and what WE wanted it to look like ahead. It was tough at first however, two years later, it definitely was worth it because the more the better in my eyes, so adding people to the team collaborating with people, it kind of helped shape where I am today in my business and in the career of music. and plus i just love helping people.
