We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Beth Thomas. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Beth below.
Beth, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
This might be cliche, but working through the pandemic was a pretty pivotal moment in my career. Prior to Covid, I was working full time in a hospital – which is where I thought I would be for the foreseeable future. When I was laid off from the hospital, I turned to building my own clientele and practice. If it weren’t for the pandemic, I don’t think I would have ventured out as soon as I did to start my own business.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve always been fascinated with how the brain works and human behavior, so I navigated towards a psychology path in school. Once I graduated, I knew I wanted to pursue a masters in counseling. Communication and perspective has something that has always come naturally to me, so it was important to me to be able to use these tools to help others. I tend to be very direct with my clients and challenge them when it’s appropriate, but this style and approach has been welcomed and appreciated by almost all my clients. My clients value my openness and relatability, which I attribute a lot of my success to. I don’t have many people who come to see me initially who don’t come back. I think that in and of itself is something to be said for the services I provide and how I present myself as a resource.
I built my practice in a more wholistic sense as my background extends to helping various individuals who are seeking counseling services. My primary focuses include sex therapy, couples counseling, and individual therapy. I’ve work with women struggling with infertility, individuals exploring their sexual identity, individuals who have anxiety and depression, and first responders experiencing work stress and trauma.
Another benefit of my practice is that I offer virtual appointments, so I can see people regardless of where they live, as long as they are in the state of Ohio.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I think the most effective strategy for me has been relying on my clients for referrals. When I went out on my own and started my own private practice, I was able to build my initial clientele from past relationships and through knowledge sharing with colleagues. From there, my services and my style have done most of the leg work for me – which I’m very proud of. A referral is one of the best compliments I receive in my profession and it’s allowed me to build a steady stream of clients.

Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Personality plays a pretty key role in my field. There always more training you can attend, or more books you can read, but being genuine and providing a safe environment for clients to open up and share whatever they need to share is something has to come naturally to individuals to succeed in my field.
