We were lucky to catch up with Bernard J Taylor recently and have shared our conversation below.
Bernard J , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a multiple award-winning playwright and have had more than 100
productions of my works worldwide. In 2013 I was made an Honorary Fellow by
the Victoria College of Music and Drama for “services to the performing arts”.
Seven recent productions of my stage works in San Antonio won 14 awards at
the 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 ATAC Awards (San Antonio’s version of New
York’s Tony Awards.) Award-winning shows:
2015: The Road to Madness (a musical about F. Scott Fitzgerald with a cast of
four:) Awards for music and lyrics and two performances awards.
2016: Make Me a Musical (a musical that affectionately spoofs various classic
musicals). Awards for script plus two performance awards.
The Last Waltz (a play about Alzheimer’s: One performance award and one for
direction.
The Last Days of Oscar Wilde: Awards for title role performance and direction.
2017: Backstage at Oz (a backstage musical about the production of a stage
version of The Wizard of Oz). Award for music and lyrics.
2018: Theatre for Scandal: (a comedy): awards for original script and two
performance awards.
I have a streamlined version of my musical version of Emily Bronteʼs “Wuthering Heights”, with new orchestration
being tried out in Asheville, North Carolina, in November. My one man play, “Tennessee Williams: Portrait of Gay Icon”, opened at the Sargent Theatre in New York in June (2025) to rave reviews and was invited to appear at the London Fringe Festival in August. Other productions are taking place in the UK and Japan.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I simply have the urge to create, mainly composing music and writing, but also painting and other forms of expression.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The satisfaction of creating something from nothing
