Beks , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
The kindest thing one of my fans has done is to buy my car off me, put a new engine in it and then give it back to me. This was last year when I posted a go fund me of me mowing lawns to raise money so I could perform at SXSW in Texas Austin in 2023. Just before I left for America, a fan reached out to me and asked if I’d sell my car. It was my first learner car, the family runaround from 1999. When I got home from touring, he had replaced the engine, dashboard, put in a new sound system in it, new lights AND then just gave it back to me.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi I’m Beks; down under diva from Australia. I write, record and perform my aussie flavour of dance pop around the world.
At a young age I began writing songs, my first hit was the most played song on local radio (it was a jingle I wrote for my mums hair salon) in my childhood country town of Bundaberg, famous for it’s rum and ginger beer. Since then, after many detors and pivots I’ve had the opportunity to perform on stages such as Suncorp Stadium, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras (audience: 40,000), and opening for Sophie Ellis-Bextor during her Australian tour.
SXSW was a highlight in 2023, kickstarting a whirlwind USA tour where I not only wrote her debut EP but also showed off my drumming finesse in LA with Blondie and Divinyls legends. Germany has been a fertile ground for my craft, collaborating with Tribbs and Neptunica on Kontor/Warner records and generating new opportunities in Europe.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Whilst on a business trip to LA, I was scammed by an alleged ‘seven times grammy nominated’ producer selling fake VIP and accomodation packages for Coachella 2024. After being introduced to this ‘producer’ in the interest of working together he soon had me withdrawing my savings to embark on what i thought was an opportunity of a lifetime. After publicly naming and shaming him (you can visit my instagram or tiktok for the details) I uncovered more than 31 independent victims by the same man across four states in the America who just happened to have come across my viral video. The video was picked up The Daily Mail, Newscorp, Channel 7 and all major music publications. What I learned from this was that I have to fight my nature. My nature is to trust people are who they say they are, that people are ethical and trustworthy and it’s taught me that if it sounds too good to be true, well, it probably is. This isn’t anything new, especially working in music, scams are riff and people pray on the power of your dream.

Have you ever had to pivot?
I’ve pivoted many times in career, the common thread that inspired all these pivots was sustainability, let me explain. I started out as a drummer in a two piece band, got a record deal, thought I was on the way up but my bandmate was misaligned and wanted to settle down, start a family and wasn’t willing to match the personal sacrifices to see the project out longterm. Sadly, after years working together, that ended. Then I pivoted to an all girl punk rock band which I fronted, financed, managed and after some success touring and on radio my bandmate became pregnant. Once again after years of working on this together, my career development was at the mercy of bands personal priorities, so sadly again this ended. After this I decided that the only real way to guarantee a return open my time and energy in project was to only depend on myself. That’s when I learned how to DJ and become a one woman act. Though I miss the camaraderie of being in a band, I am now fully self sustainable.
