We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ashlyn Coronado a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ashlyn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
After I graduated from college, I immediately started a full time job as a Behavioral Health case manager. This job had many challenges and helped me grow in many ways. During this time, I really turned to my mindfulness practice to manage/ prevent my stress and anxiety due to my job. A year after being a case manager, I had experienced burn out, as many do. I always had the idea of starting my own mindfulness business but never thought to pursue it. After my one year mark, I re-evaluated what I really wanted to do for my career. So, I decided to take the leap and quit my full time job to start my business. It was scary because I did not have a back up job lined up yet. I trusted that I was meant to start this business and help others through mindfulness practice. Almost two years later, I am still in business, and am officially certified as a mindfulness meditation teacher. I am also getting into the corporate wellness field, which has been one of my main goals in my business! I’m proud of myself for trusting and taking that leap of faith.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For those of you who don’t know, I created my business called Mindfullyash. Mindfullyash is a mindfulness coaching business where I do one-on-one coaching, as well as corporate wellness programs. I decided to get into the field of wellness because this practice has greatly impacted my own life, and still does today. I first learned about mindfulness in college during a stress management class. It came at the perfect time because I was dealing with immense anxiety, and had no clue how to handle it. It was starting to affect my school work and relationships. I then began to get very into mindfulness, and created my own daily practice including meditation and yoga. Ever since I saw what a positive impact it had on my mental health and overall wellbeing, I knew I wanted to teach others about it.
Right now, I teach one-on-one coaching for women who are looking to reduce stress, become present, and improve their overall wellbeing. I have also created a corporate wellness program to bring mindfulness into the corporate world. This will help employees reduce/manage stress, reduce burnout, improve mental health, and provide better focus/productivity. Another thing I have been doing is in-person meditations at fitness studios, or online. I am really just trying to spread the word of mindfulness, and beat the stereotypes around this practice!
My business solves the problem of stress, anxiety, burnout, and overthinking. Mindfulness is really about being present in the moment while noticing our thoughts, emotions, and surroundings without judgment. It’s much more than meditating, or just noticing thoughts. I would be able to teach you all about how mindfulness works, different mindful practices/tools, the science, and how to integrate it into your daily routine. This will leave you feeling calmer, more present, self-aware, and less reactive!
I am most proud of sticking with my business even when it gets hard and un-motivating because I turn to my why – helping others through this practice. I have a passion for helping others with their wellbeing and mental health, and mindfulness is the perfect tool. I would love my potential clients to know that I will be there every step of the way, and will motivate them to create a positive lifestyle through this practice. I will always bring a positive attitude, and will encourage them!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One story that comes to mind is when I first launched my coaching program in 2021. I had put in months and months of work, created the entire online program, and even promoted on social media. I was so excited to launch and take on clients. When I launched, I didn’t realize I had to promote it for weeks afterwards. I wasn’t as prepared as I thought. I didn’t sign on any clients, or even have a single person show interest. I was very sad and confused because I knew this is something people need badly (especially since the pandemic). I allowed myself to be upset for a few days, and then got back to work. I looked at what I did wrong, and what I could improve on. I definitely learned a lot more about how to successfully launch and promote on social media. I feel that I showed resilience because I didn’t let that one bad launch stop me from my business. I learned and grew from that experience.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I think patience is very important. Mindfulness is not as mainstream as I first thought. I was surprised to find out that a lot of people don’t know what it is. So, not only do I need to sell my products, but I also am teaching my audience what mindfulness is, and why they need it. It has definitely been a huge learning curve because it is twice the work. But, I know this practice is useful for everyone and is highly needed. I have been patient with teaching people what this practice is, and showing them how they can benefit.
