We recently connected with Ashley Goods and have shared our conversation below.
Ashley, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
#ILoveMyBusy Is not something I say it’s something I feel!!! Me being a person who specializes in dreadlocs and natural styles I have found that it is my happy place. I love taking someone’s crown and polishing it to their liking and make them come back and walk away knowing AKstyles will get me right every time. I am known for my neatness my professionalism my personable behavior and just all-around a person you can count on!!! I am proud of the fact that since I had to start over and becoming known in my city and as well as my progression as a stylist and my eagerness to learn the environment and the genre and take it up to a different height. I want to give back to my clients by getting better and making sure I continue to give greatness with every visit.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My story started just a random day at college… in 2011… can’t believe it’s been 10 years
There were a couple of guys who needed their hair done and honestly, I was just wanting the experience. Over the years starting in 2015 as a mobile stylist… that is when I started to actually charge for my services. I was just doing hair to just give that sense of relief that sense of non-stressful manner of figuring out what to do with my hair. I honestly can’t stand doing my own hair but I love making someone smile, making someone’s day, give them that boost of confidence, or just honestly just polishing their 👑.
Now that I’m in a new environment I have moved to Arizona I have a new shop location and also, I am still a mobile stylist and honestly, I’m just ready for new beginnings & building my brand!!!
With starting over came a lot of ups and downs but I overcame it. Being booked for two months at a time and now have my very own products. I feel like my start of a great success story is starting!!! #ILoveMyBusy
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
My happy place turned into a full time career. My one place that I used to take me out of my head and all the negativity that was around at the time. I started to see the impact of getting your hair done as well as having someone who take care of it like their own. So I made it my way to do it more often and build a clientele. Word of mouth became the success of getting AKstyles known and off the ground. The biggest milestone in my business was when I uprooted from the birth place of where it all started and moved to Arizona. I was no longer working from home so that is when I went into high gear. I had to rebrand and focus on finding why and what made me love my happy place.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
I get the infamous question. What can I use on my hair? Since AZ is a big melting pot I noticed everyone is not from here and as no one knows where anything is. So I went ahead and I created a concoction that is suitable for those pesky spots that have extreme lack or growth and dry scalp. I wanted to give the client an oil to stimulate circulation to their scalp, meaning that the hair growth is better supported and follicles are strengthened. It also balances the oil producing glands in the scalp, providing more growth-friendly conditions.
With my mixture I know I can guarantee results. The products are handmade to help restore and rejuvenate the client’s crown!
The best lesson to manufacturing your own products is research research research! I have learned so much and I am glad I can give the knowledge I learn back.
