We were lucky to catch up with April Nunn recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, April thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I knew I wanted to pursue an art career after I got my associates in culinary management. After graduating from high school, I wanted a backup plan just in case my art career did not flourish, so I decided to go to community college for culinary management. During those four years, I realized that even though I love cooking, I love being in the arts a lot more and I was very determined after getting my degree that I wanted to pursue a art degree. Soon as I graduated from the community college, I went back and earned a Bachelors in Fine Arts with a focus in illustration. I spent five years getting the degree and it was the best decision I ever made.
April, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello, my name is April. I am from the countryside in Michigan. I got into doing art when I was little. I love to draw all day, every day. I love art so much that I wanted to make it into a career but didn’t know what career I wanted to focus on but then once I got in more into it, I realized where most of my work was going to go towards character design or drawing people I realize that where I’m going to be going into my career probably. So my business is called Apr.Nun Studio; it is a business with various stuff, but right now is more towards art. I provide for my clients; I would draw their characters if they give me reference pictures of themselves; what they want in the drawing if it is a family portrait or themselves; I also can do logos. I’ve also can do posters for events. I can also design some illustrations for businesses for their events or app. There is some stuff I really want to get into but haven’t gone to yet because I’m still working on it. I want to do more work regarding background design and concept art with interactions; it’s still in the working process, but hopefully, once I get a good handle on it will also be added to what I can provide for my clients.
I’m proud to see how my clients react to the finished product. Seeing them react with a positive feeling filled my heart; it made me so happy that I could give them something they liked, know that they love my work, and want to see more of how my journey goes in art. But also, being someone’s inspiration to future artists from my work is always the most precious thing I would love to do.
I am a very private person. I am trying to open up more, and don’t get me wrong, I am open to people if I know someone for quite a while, but if someone is new, it will take me a while to open up if I am in an environment where I don’t know many people. I will be quiet, but if I’m in an environment where I know almost everyone, I’ll be more open to talking to new people. It’s kind of weird, but I am chilled, I promise. Another thing is that my business is still growing, so it’s like it’s still not as fully concrete as it could be, and I’m still learning and making mistakes along the way so; please understand that I’m still new to this, and I’m hoping to get better at it as I keep improving. And some fun facts I love Korean culture, history, pop culture, k-pop, Korean R&B Korean hip hop, so I’ve listened to J-pop as well. I also like anime, not as much as I used to, but I still like it.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
It was my senior showcase, and I had to get some final stuff for my showcase, having multiple large artworks for the show but also having the stuff to sell and promote. With this supposed to be a crucial class to know, I passed my major getting and got my degree. It was a lot harder for me to work on it because there were other stuff along the way, mostly with other classes that needed my priority. Still, my professor kept assisting me to focus on the senior showcase, which did help. Still, it backfired a lot, not too much, but to the point where I realized that I have an issue where if I focus on one thing, others think that I have other priorities and start not to get the attention that I need to finish. Then I have to rush to get the other stuff done; that shows how I work when it comes to getting stuff done, even though it was an excellent experience to have my first showcase on my own and stuff. Still, I need to prepare more and be clear with people about what I can do right now. I can do a lot more stuff with my work. I still need to be given time to work on it, which won’t happen overnight, and I realize that, but I just need to make sure I confront people and tell them what I can and can’t do instead of agreeing on it.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Seeing the positive react of the finish product because it bring a smile to my face. They are happy on how it turn out and knowing they would want to see what’s next in store for my artwork.
