We recently connected with Anushua Sinha and have shared our conversation below.
Anushua, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
As a newly graduated architect in India, I had the opportunity to work on a project that involved redesigning a space under a flyover. While my team and I were enthusiastic about our ideas for the space, we also recognized the importance of creating something that would benefit the surrounding communities. However, despite being from the same city, we faced language barriers and communication gaps that made it challenging for us to fully understand the needs and desires of the local people, who were likely frustrated with us as well.
Despite these obstacles, we made an effort to visit the site at different times and connect with as many different sections of the community as possible, hoping to establish a dialogue. During one of these visits, we decided to try a new approach: we presented our sketches and drawings to the people, who immediately became engaged and excited. It was then that we realized the power of visual communication and the impact it could have on our project.
From that point on, we used pictures and symbols to communicate with the locals, presenting them with drawings and sketches that they could rearrange according to their preferences, or add their own ideas. This new approach opened up a channel of communication and collaboration that had previously been closed off by language barriers.
This experience changed my perspective on the power of drawing and visual communication. Previously, it had simply been a hobby or a pastime, but now it had materialized into something much more meaningful and impactful. I am forever grateful to this project for transforming something that I enjoyed into a superpower that could make a positive difference in the world.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Hi I’m Anushua Sinha a.k.a Shua, an illustrator hailing from India and I’m all about the bold and bright. My journey to illustration wasn’t a straight line. I completed 5 years of architecture school and 2 years in the field before recognizing the sketches in my notebook were more than just a pastime – they were my calling.
As an artist, I’ve never been one to leave a blank canvas. Growing up, I’ve always been mesmerized by the way small shops and homes nestled themselves into every inch of available space. Even the dreariest of slums were transformed by painted bottles and patched quilts. This is the inspiration behind my work – it’s a reflection of my love for all things bustling and beautiful. My art is like a patchwork quilt itself, with bits of gouache, graphite, and digital design all woven together. I’m obsessed with texture and finding ways to merge traditional and modern techniques.
I’m a sucker for a good story and love bringing narratives to life through my work. i lean on my indian roots to create colorful visuals with emaning. I’m currently setting my sights on the world of advertising, editorial, and book illustration, where I can put my talents to good use. So, if you’re in need of a splash of color or a dash of whimsy, I’m your gal! Ultimately, I create art to infuse joy into everyday objects and make stories come alive. Sure, I may not have superpowers or a grand purpose, but I’ve got color and a whole lotta space to fill!

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
In life, I had always considered art as a mere hobby, a side project that brought me joy in my free time. However, when I discovered illustration as a viable career option, I knew that I had found my calling. Despite the challenges and obstacles that came with pursuing this path, I persevered and poured my heart and soul into every project. My ultimate goal now is to turn my passion for illustration into a sustainable career. I have created ad campaigns, crafted picture book dummies, and translated articles into visual editorial interpretations, all while taking on countless projects in order to gain exposure. As I prepare to take the leap into professional work, I am determined to work tirelessly towards making my illustrative dreams a reality.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building a social media audience can be a challenging task, especially when you’re unsure of where to begin. Personally, I approach social media as a digital sketchbook, and I find that Instagram is the perfect platform to share my work. In the beginning, seeking validation was a big stumbling block for me, but now I treat filling my grid as an exercise. Whether it’s process work or inspiration I gather from a walk in the park, I put out content regularly to help me gather my thoughts. Although I would love for my work to be widely appreciated, I’ve learned to keep creating and sharing even if it’s not. In short, my strategy for building a social media audience is consistency and persistence in creating and sharing content that is meaningful to me.
