We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Annmarie Meyers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Annmarie , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I went full time in my business the fall of 2019. At the time, I felt like I was being pulled in too many directions. I had a full time job in retail, so it was not the traditional M-F schedule. My business is primarily wedding and event florals, so my weekends were occupied with events. It got to the point where I either be taking every Friday and Saturday off or working random hours to make sure I could accomplish everything needed.
Coming into the fall wedding season, I felt like I wasn’t giving my job or my business the attention it deserved. My husband and I decided it was time to take the leap.
With my impeccable timing, I took a huge leap of faith not knowing what was coming in 2020. Spring 2020 was going to be my biggest season ever, then everything went sideways.
After a few uncertain months, people began having smaller events and putting more thought into the details, which meant flowers. I filled my calendar with smaller events and pushed on through, surprising myself by having the biggest year ever and breaking into six figures for the first time.
Annmarie , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into this industry by chance. I wanted to be an architect when I was younger, even went to college for it for a while. Applying for retail jobs, I would apply for anything remotely appealing. One of which was a florist at a grocery store, I did not get that position because Louisiana has licensing laws but it sparked an idea.
My grandmother was a gardener, spending summers at her house and garden has always been a fond memory throughout my childhood. Why couldn’t I make a life out of it? I started researching floral design, learning from YouTube videos and practicing when I could. I got my floral license in 2013 and did a couple weddings for friends. Got married and did my own wedding flowers in 2014, do not recommend, it was stressful. I learned a lot a long the way so I would not change it. I took a couple years off to work and figure out what I wanted to do.
I knew I wanted my business to be different, I did not want to do traditional floral design and offer it in a traditional way. Doing every day orders did not excite me, but having the chance to play a part in a couple’s love story did.
Hummingbird Floral Studio is a bespoke, garden style design studio. Using my grandmother’s love of hummingbirds and the fleeting beauty of life’s moments. We create textured, layered floral designs that wow, breaking the mold of the more traditional designs.
We design flowers for weddings, parties, brand activations, festivals, and anywhere you want to make a statement.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Instagram is a big portion of my business. I keep it fairly simple though. I know reels, calls to action and putting your face at the front of the business are important, but as an introvert it can be hard to incorporate those elements,
I use it as a tool to showcase what we can do. I only post professional photos, as my own photography skills are quite lacking. I save my photography for IG stories, because it disappears. I want people to see our work in the best way possible.
Tagging people, locations and using localized hashtags play a vital role. The wedding and event industry is a very collaborative space, so tagging everyone whose work is in the photo or worked on the event at all, fosters good relationships. They share your posts which brings you a new audience. Using localized tagging helps bring your posts and business to people actively looking for what you provide.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Our art is deeply linked into the most special days of someone’s life. It is so special to be chosen to be a part of a lasting memory.
Witnessing the love and family on a weekly basis, while working with the most stunning product is so fulfilling.
