We were lucky to catch up with Annie Scherer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Annie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Moving away from home was a big risk for me. I grew up in Albany, New York my whole life, and I’m very close with my family and friends. About a year ago, I moved to Nashville to pursue my music career after graduating college and saving up money.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been a whole year since moving to Nashville. I’ve met some of the most incredible musicians and friends, There is so much opportunity and the pop scene is growing rapidly. I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m an independent, indie-pop artist currently based in Nashville, and my music is comparable to artists such as Lana Del Rey, Weyes Blood, and Sir Chloe.
So far I’ve produced all of my releases, and I’ve developed a deep respect for other female producers. I’ve had a lot more collaborations since moving to Nashville and I’m excited to share what we’ve created.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
There’s a lot of ways society can help, and most of it is free.
Support local art! A little goes a very long way, and it’s never been harder for artists to make a living. Going to shows and sharing music on social media is extremely helpful. Buying as opposed to streaming music is also great.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the biggest struggles of being an artist right now is the social media pressure. I’ve always been an introvert and I’ve never shared very much about my personal life on social media. It’s hard to translate music into short visual experiences.
I’ve really had to step out of my comfort zone and commit to the industry trends. While it’s been a challenge, I also feel like I’ve gotten to know myself better as an artist.
