We were lucky to catch up with Angelica Duran recently and have shared our conversation below.
Angelica , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I did a lot of research online for information on candle making. I joined various Facebook group communities, YouTube university, and Google, Google, Google! I found so much information and very helpful people willing to give me some much needed information. If I had known how much work went into candle making I would have started testing my ideas much much sooner. One of the most essential skills I learned is having patience. There’s no such thing as rushing the process when it comes to candles. Testing each wax, wick, fragrance, container is so time consuming and; at times; frustrating. The largest obstacle I encountered would have to be the cost of testing. Testing each fragrance and each type of container uses a lot of supplies. I had so many ideas I wanted to test each one which wasn’t always possible.

Angelica , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I once owned a cottage bakery where I created custom creative cakes. When I decided to get into candles I knew it had to be creative dessert type of candles. Something that stood out from the rest. Not your everyday type of candle. I also knew I wanted my culture represented in my business. My candles are unique, fun and creative. They not only resemble your favorite desserts and drinks but smell like them too! If you’re looking for a unique gift or centerpiece for your party, look no further. All my candles are made in small batches. I am the artist and sole maker of each and every one of these candles. No piece is exactly the same and I love that.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media is a must when it comes to growing your business. It becomes an additional job and very time consuming but is essential. I first posted pictures of my finished products and then showed some of my process. But social media is ever changing. Now videos showing your face, catchy music, and adding helpful information goes a long way in reaching a broader audience. You definitely have to step out of your comfort zone. It is so worth it in the end.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is not only making my ideas a reality but the joy they bring. When I see the excitement customers show when purchasing or smelling one of my candles it gives me a sense of accomplishment. The fact other people love my work and enjoy it almost as much as I do makes me truly happy.
