We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Angela Gast. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Angela below.
Angela, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My mission is to empower women, specifically moms, with resources to better manage their home life in today’s fast-paced world.
My primary focus is on making space for family meals. I also offer organization tips, gardening hacks, outfit ideas, and Hygge lifestyle inspiration. All of these things work together to support modern-day moms who are generally working full time while still creating and managing a home.
The name Mighty Mrs. gives the illusion of needing to be super woman. But with the right approach, tools, and shortcuts, you can achieve superwoman status, without the burn out and without putting unrealistic expectations on yourself. Ultimately, enjoying the journey of motherhood and creating a nurturing home for your family.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into food blogging when my daughter was born in 2009. I enjoyed the process of cooking, wanted to get better at it, and wanted to be able to share food as a way to connect with others and serve my family something delightful and nutritious.
My food blog evolved over the years to more of a website offering individual recipes, a monthly dinner menu, and a shop of my favorite things. What I want to provide is “Super easy recipes” — easy prep methods, shortcuts where possible, and yet delicious flavor. So if people are looking for a recipe that tastes great, but won’t take all day to make, I want them to stop by my website and browse first.
As moms, I think most of us have that desire to nurture and express love with food but we have so many demands on us as well. Look good, be healthy, be confident, be organized, be available to our husband-kids-friends-family-neighbors, be organic, save the Earth, the list goes on. I want to just lighten the load. I’ve found that with some planning and organization and self-care (Hygge-style), I have a better shot of being the mom I want to be and my family needs. So I try to share what works for me and my friends, in real time.
As a website with 3.6 million visitors per year, I am able to offer all my content for free, because my advertisers support the cost of doing business. I love that anyone with internet and a web browser can access my content (which almost all library branches offer). I want to be accessible to all moms, no matter their tax bracket.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I think all business owners need to be ready to pivot at all times. The world is constantly evolving and you need to be serving a real need. As a person, your availability, skillset, and income requirements are also constantly in flux. So for me, I’m constantly stopping to take a step back and assess these things. Usually when I feel overwhelmed is when I realize something needs to change or something isn’t working. I may need to optimize one social media channel to be more effective, or I may need to outsource something that is taking up too much of my time. I may need to cut expenses or spend more on advertising. Being nimble and not getting stuck in your process is so important. Pivoting is how you grow and stay relevant. Keep a foothold on what’s working then use your other foot to step into something new.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I started my website as a side hustle while working full time. For years I worked on it without making any money, just a hope that somehow it would come together. Many people had stories of success in my food blogging world, some much more quickly than I experienced. Which was motivating but at times felt defeating. I kept going, despite wanting to give up many times, and eventually launched into generating an income and then ultimately my website become my full-time job.
It was a sacrifice to get there. For years, I spent most of my evenings working, giving up a lot social events. I don’t think I missed much, a few happy hours and gossip which was fine by me! That stuff can be a distraction.
I eventually got laid off from my FT job which was the kick I needed to go full-time. I used my other skills in graphic design to make money right away as I set up my LLC, worked on building content for my site and building traffic to support passive ad revenue. I took sponsorship opportunities with brands willing to sponsor some of my content, I also offered local businesses photography services. I essentially pivoted my way to where I am today. Little steps of letting go and stepping out in faith with a strategic plan. Some fails, some wins.
