We recently connected with Angela Ferrier and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Angela, thanks for joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Being a business owner certainly makes me happy, because owning my time and creating something from zero is a feeling that would not compare with working for someone else. I have thought about having a regular job when times get hard, but at the same time I don’t think I was born to work for somebody else. Owning your own business is like a riding a rollercoaster, constant adrenaline with ups and downs. You can wake up feeling terrible because of things going bad, and be celebrating that night because you achieved your business goals. Working for somebody is like riding a carousel, no excitement and the same thing over and over again. You can change the pony, but it will still just go in circles. If you ask me which ride I would choose I’m going for the adrenaline, excitement, all the ups and downs and following my passion.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I have been working in the fashion industry for over 10 years. Since I was a little girl I’ve always loved expressing myself through fashion. I have owned my business now for 3 years, which is a creative space for younger and older people that always wanted to work in fashion, or just learn how to sew. As a representative of the Latin community, I needed to create a space for the minorities that didn’t have the opportunity to go to college for legal or economical reasons. This place is open for everybody to learn and start their careers in fashion, art and beauty.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When the pandemic first started in March of 2020, my lease at my first studio was coming to an end and I lost all my students because everyone went into quarantine so I did not have any money to renew my lease or afford a new one. I made the decision to close my shop and work from home, coming up with the idea shortly after of making facemasks and selling them. I sold more than 5000 facemasks all around the country. I was able to help people with their safety and at the same time raise that money to open my new studio later in the year, which is even better than the previous one. I was able to get more students and my business was resurrected. At the end, it was an extremely rough situation but I made the best of it.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What helped build my reputation was definitely keeping my promises to my students, being reliable and on time, being responsible and always caring for my students well-being. It’s really important to keep your word with students or clients and respecting their needs. I always strive to improve myself to bring more quality and knowledge to my services and classes.
