We recently connected with Andy Romanoff and have shared our conversation below.
Andy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I spent fifty years working as a creative for others before setting off on my own. Some of that time was wonderful and eventually, it was lucrative, but nothing compares with waking up every morning and working on what I want to work on. It seems to me that the work is the work and there can be satisfaction in doing it for yourself or others. But there is something more when you are chasing your own rabbits down their unique holes.
Andy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi, I’m an old guy who has done a lot of things in my life. As a young man, I was a still photographer and a cinematographer. Then I wandered into business – founding a company that made instructional videos. Then I pioneered remote camera technology for motion pictures, and that led to more business as a senior exec for Panavision. About ten years ago I returned to my first love, making pictures, but this time that led me to writing, and slowly I began to put words and pictures together as a photojournalist and author.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Nothing feels better to me than finding my way through the maze to the moment when something new reveals itself. When I’m making pictures there sometimes comes a moment when the pictures call me to take them. It’s not my deciding mind saying do this or that, but the part that sits quiet and watching until something reveals itself. Similarly, there are days when a sentence forms itself in my mind and I know to write it down right away because it wants to lead me to something I don’t already know. That’s breathtaking!
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Make friends and treasure them. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Know that there is part of you you can not know but if you sit quietly facing the work it may reveal itself. There is nothing better.
