We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amber Sellers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Amber, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
What I think it takes to be successful is to never give up on what you’re doing. There will be bumps in the road and some of them will be bigger than the rest but its up to you to not give up and go around those holes. I tried starting up my business three times in the past before I finally sat down and said, “I’m going to do it!”. Also depending on what you’re doing, practice makes perfect. I started sewing when I was twelve years old and I wasn’t that good. But after years of practice, Now I can say I’m comfortable on what I can make. Keep practicing and never give up on what you’re trying to accomplish is my way to be successful.

Amber, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi, I’m Amber Sellers and I make fluffy costumes and costume parts. I gotten into my crafting when I was twelve getting into anime and anime conventions. I saw all these beautiful costumes and wanted to start making my own. So I took up a sewing class in middle school and continue to sew throughout the rest of my life. In high school, I learned about anime club and joined it. We went to conventions around the area to experience what they had to offer. In high school, I learned about the furry community and fursuits. I got interested into making fursuits in highschool and starting making faux fur tails and ears etc. After graduating I got into the rave community and saw that people worn what they called ” spirit hoods”, which are fur hoods with hand pockets. I really loved seeing the different styles and colors people were bringing to the raves I was attending and the pictures on social media. So I was thinking why not mix all there communities? I started to make fur hoods, tails, fur scarfs, leg fluffies, etc for the anime, furry and rave community last year in September. I don’t use a sewing machine either. Everything I made is all hand sewn. I want to give the option for people to get custom work done on what they want at a decent price.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me is social media, mainly Tiktok, word by mouth from previous clients, and selling my premades at conventions.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I started my audience on social media by posting daily, once or twice a day on Instagram, Facebook and Tiktok. When people react or comment I usually respond back to them to give them the feel that their comment matters and makes me feel greatful that they took the time to comment on my posts.
