We were lucky to catch up with Amanda Gordon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Amanda, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
I believe that the education system needs to prioritize social-emotional learning alongside academic achievement. Too often, schools focus solely on test scores and standardized assessments, neglecting the development of essential skills like empathy, communication, and critical thinking. These skills are crucial for success in both personal and professional life.
For example, I struggled with anxiety and social isolation throughout my schooling. While I was able to achieve good grades, I lacked the confidence and interpersonal skills to pursue my desired career path. It wasn’t until I joined a community service organization that I began to develop my social skills and discover my passion for helping others.
If schools had placed more emphasis on social-emotional learning, I might have had a smoother transition into adulthood. By teaching students how to manage their emotions, build healthy relationships, and solve problems effectively, we can equip them with the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly complex world.

Amanda, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a lifelong learner and advocate for mental health and wellness, I’ve had a diverse career path that has led me to my current roles as a Director of Grant Development, Adaptive Sports Assistant, HR Manager, and Regulatory Compliance Business Owner. My journey began with a passion for helping others and a personal experience with mental health challenges, including GAD, social anxiety, depression, and panic disorder.
Through my various roles, I’ve had the opportunity to work with people from all walks of life and gain a deep understanding of the unique challenges they face. This experience has shaped my approach to my work and has driven me to create businesses that address these needs.
My tutoring services for kids with learning disabilities focus on providing personalized support and fostering a positive learning environment. As an HR Manager, I specialize in creating inclusive and supportive workplaces. My regulatory compliance business helps organizations navigate complex regulations and ensure compliance.
I’m particularly proud of the positive impact I’ve been able to make on the lives of my clients. Whether it’s helping a student overcome their learning challenges or supporting an organization in creating a more equitable workplace, my goal is to make a difference.
I believe what sets me apart is my unique blend of personal experience, professional expertise, and a deep commitment to helping others. I’m passionate about using my skills and knowledge to create positive change and make a lasting impact.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
One of the most challenging periods in my life was when I was diagnosed with endometriosis and PCOS. These conditions caused significant physical pain and emotional distress. There were times when I felt overwhelmed and unsure if I could handle the challenges I was facing.
Despite the pain and uncertainty, I refused to let these conditions define me. I sought medical treatment, made lifestyle changes, and developed coping mechanisms to manage my symptoms. I learned to advocate for myself and to find support from others who understood what I was going through.
Through it all, I maintained my resilience and my determination to live a fulfilling life. This experience has taught me the importance of self-care, perseverance, and finding strength even in the darkest of times.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
As a seasoned professional with a diverse background in education, healthcare, and business, I’ve learned firsthand the importance of effective leadership and team management.
One key strategy I’ve found to be particularly effective is fostering a culture of open communication and trust. By creating an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing their ideas, concerns, and feedback, I’ve been able to build strong relationships and improve team morale. For example, during a challenging project, I encouraged open dialogue and facilitated brainstorming sessions to gather input from everyone on the team. This collaborative approach not only led to innovative solutions but also strengthened team cohesion and boosted morale.
Another essential element of effective leadership is recognizing and rewarding team members for their contributions. By acknowledging their hard work and accomplishments, I’ve been able to motivate my team and create a sense of pride and ownership in their work. For instance, when a team member exceeded expectations on a project, I made sure to publicly praise their efforts and provide them with a tangible reward. This positive reinforcement not only boosted their morale but also inspired others on the team to strive for excellence.
Finally, empowering team members is crucial for maintaining high morale and fostering a sense of ownership. By delegating tasks and providing opportunities for growth and development, I’ve been able to empower my team members and build their confidence. This has led to increased job satisfaction, improved performance, and a more engaged and motivated team.
