We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alyssa Hoberer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alyssa below.
Alyssa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I started my passion for brewing after buying a used 5 gallon homebrew set up off of Craigslist and started brewing in my 3rd floor apartment 8 years ago. Since then, I have gotten my certificate in Brewing from Regis University and have worked and learned from many experienced brewers in the industry to get me to where I am now as the Head Brewer at Jagged Mountain Craft Brewery. I think overall, my speed of learning in the field of brewing has been relatively fast after training under some really talented brewers at my previous brewing job at Lone Tree Brewing Company. I think working with brewers that have so much experience and knowledge is so important to grow, The skills that are the most essential in brewing are attention to detail, consistency, and and always being willing to improve and learn, I would say the only obstacles that stood in the way of learning more is a lack of confidence. To be a woman in a male dominated field like brewing its easy to feel down on yourself like you aren’t good enough. I wish when I first started out that I would have really leaned in to my confidence and ability to learn things fast and really let my creativity shine early on. Its taken some time to develop that, but its totally worth it and much more fulfilling.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a female brewer in the beer industry – im a head brewer at Jagged Mountain Craft Brewery in downtown Denver and I run a popular social media under the name @southernbeergirl that supports diversity in craft beer.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Interacting with like minded accounts, or similar message accounts helped me build my following. Making sure that you are following, messaging and commenting on all of these pages can help you get a good following. Also posting regularly, with a clear theme and responding to comments and interacting with your followers is very important.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a brewer is being able to create a product that brings people together. I love coming up with new and unique beers and seeing a group of friends come into the brewery to drink over good conversation. I love that beer can be the universal language… I can go anywhere in the world and be able to share a beer with someone and have a conversation about it
