We recently connected with Allison Lee and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Allison thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the best or worst investment you’ve made?
When I first started as an esthetician, I was eager to do it all—lashes, brows, waxing, makeup, facials, massages—you name it, I signed up for the class. I invested a lot of time and money trying to master every service in the esthetics field. At the time, I thought being a “one-stop shop” would help me grow faster, but I quickly learned that spreading myself too thin wasn’t sustainable.
Eventually, I discovered my true passion: facials. Although they didn’t bring in much income at first, I added waxing to my service menu to stay afloat financially. Over time, as my facial clientele grew and I honed my skills, I was able to transition back to focusing solely on facial treatments—which is where I thrive most.
The biggest lesson I learned? Sometimes less is more. Specializing allowed me to grow deeper in my craft, build a stronger brand, and attract the right clients. It was a costly but powerful investment in discovering where I truly shine.

Allison , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into this industry because I’ve always had a passion for making people feel good about themselves—inside and out. Skincare, for me, is more than just products and routines; it’s about confidence, healing, and self-care. Unfortunately, many of us weren’t taught the importance of skincare growing up, so we often don’t know how to care for our skin properly. I wanted to be that person who helps change that narrative. My mission is to educate, empower, and help people fall in love with their skin.
As an esthetician, facial treatments are my absolute favorite to perform. There’s something powerful about helping someone relax, feel nurtured, and walk away glowing—not just physically, but emotionally too. My approach is all about personalization and simplicity. I focus on creating skin rituals that feel good and actually work.
Skin Hue is my baby. It’s my skincare line and the heart of my brand. I created it to offer clients simple, effective, and essential products to start or elevate their skincare journey. From our gentle cleanser to the hydrating serum and rose toner, every product is crafted with intention and care. Skin Hue reflects my belief that skincare doesn’t have to be complicated—it just has to be consistent and aligned with your skin’s needs.
What sets me apart is my ability to connect with clients beyond the treatment room. I meet them where they are—whether they’re just starting their skincare journey or looking to take it to the next level. I’m most proud of the trust I’ve built, the transformations I’ve witnessed, and the safe space I’ve created for people to show up as their authentic selves.
At the end of the day, I want people to know that Skin Hue is more than a brand—it’s a movement centered on confidence, education, and holistic care. I’m here to help you glow through what you go through.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn was expecting family to automatically support my business just because they’re family. As much as we hope for that encouragement, I realized that entrepreneurship is about creating something that resonates beyond your inner circle. At the end of the day, your product or service has to speak to people on its own. It was a tough realization, but it helped me grow. I learned not to take it personally and to stay focused on finding the audience that truly connects with my message and my mission. The right clients will come and they’ll support you not out of obligation, but because they genuinely believe in what you do.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Being authentic and honest has been my most effective strategy for growing my clientele. The majority of my clients come from word of mouth, and I absolutely love that! I’ll start with one client, and then it’s like a ripple effect. They send their sister, cousin, aunt and my absolute favorite, their mothers! Before I know it, I’m the “Family’s Esthetician” in their circle, and I love that for me! Building real connections and making people feel comfortable and seen keeps the referrals flowing.
