We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alisha Diggs a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alisha, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
One of the most impactful things my parents did for me was expose me to different cultures and environments at an early age, which has shaped my perspective and entrepreneurial journey in profound ways.
When I was 10 years old, I lived in Ethiopia for a year because my mother worked for the Civil Service College in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, through a program that allowed U.S. professors to go to Africa. That experience opened my eyes to the beauty and richness of other cultures, but also to the challenges and hardships that many people face. For a young girl from the States, this was an eye-opening experience. I went to school there, made friends, and even learned some of the local language, Amharic. It was my first exposure to life outside of the comforts of home, and it taught me humility.
This early exposure to different ways of life made me adaptable in all environments, a trait that has been key to my career as a travel nurse and in running my business, Nurse on the Move. It helped me approach each new place and person with an open mind, understanding that every culture has its own unique value. This adaptability has allowed me to connect with people across the globe.
In terms of entrepreneurship, this experience instilled in me a desire to create something that not only serves a purpose but also gives back to communities around the world. My career is rooted in global outreach, healthcare, and building meaningful connections, all of which stem from that pivotal time in Ethiopia. My parents’ decision to expose me to these experiences early on has been a guiding light in shaping my career and my desire to have a global impact.

Alisha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Alisha Diggs, and I am a Clinical Registered Nurse, entrepreneur, and global health advocate. My journey into the healthcare industry began with a deep passion for caring for others and a desire to make an impact not just locally, but globally.
After earning my nursing degree and gaining experience in both hospital and home health settings, I realized that I wanted to expand my work beyond the traditional healthcare roles. This led me to start Nurse on the Move, a platform where I combine my love for authentic experiences through travel, education, and outreach.
Nurse on the Move is more than just a travel-based healthcare company—it’s a community-centered initiative designed to connect like-minded individuals, promote health literacy around the world, and focus on lifelong learning. We organize medical missions and outreach programs, focusing on areas in Africa, including Ghana, Kenya, and soon Tanzania, as well as domestic locations.
What sets Nurse on the Move apart is our approach to integrating cultural exchange with philanthropy efforts, and our commitment to building meaningful relationships in the communities we serve. We don’t just fly in, offer services, and leave; we allow our travelers to integrate into the environment and make an impact allowing them to be global change makers. I’ve developed a strong ability to connect with people from all walks of life, and that’s something I’m incredibly proud of.
In addition to my nursing work, I’m also the author of a book, Networking Around the World: A Practical Guide, where I share strategies for building authentic connections that can help propel your career and personal growth. It’s a resource for anyone looking to expand their network, whether in their hometown or across the globe. I want potential clients, followers, and collaborators to know that my work is rooted in compassion, authenticity, and a genuine desire to uplift and serve others.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Several books and resources have had a significant impact on my management style and entrepreneurial philosophy.
One of the most influential books for me is “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie. It taught me the power of building genuine relationships and understanding human behavior, which is essential in both healthcare and entrepreneurship. This book has shaped the way I connect with others, whether it’s networking or managing a team. It emphasizes the importance of empathy and making others feel valued, which has been a cornerstone of how I lead in my business.
Another game-changing book is “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz. This book focuses on personal freedom and the mindset shifts needed to live authentically. The lessons on not taking things personally and always doing your best have been particularly helpful in navigating the highs and lows of entrepreneurship.
I also find inspiration in “Think and Grow Rich: A Black Choice” by Dennis Kimbro. This book covers principles of success through the lens of the Black experience, which resonates deeply with my own journey. It reinforces the idea that wealth is not just about money—it’s about mindset, vision, and perseverance.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
There are a few key principles that have helped build my reputation within the healthcare and entrepreneurial markets.
First and foremost, professionalism has been a cornerstone of my approach. I prioritize consistency and reliability, ensuring I show up when and where I commit to. By being a woman of my word, I cultivate a sense of dependability that clients and partners can count on. This professionalism not only reflects my commitment to my work but also sets a standard for those around me.
Authenticity has also played a crucial role in my reputation. I believe in being genuine in all my interactions. By staying true to my values and mission, I’ve forged meaningful connections that resonate with others, which is invaluable for building a solid reputation.
Additionally, my focus on community engagement and service has helped solidify my standing in the market. By actively contributing to initiatives that empower others and foster positive change, I position myself as a trusted resource within my industry.
