Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alexys Pelissier. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alexys, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Since the moment I decided makeup is what I was doing I knew I wanted to experience being a makeup artist in LA. You would think that over the years I would’ve built up a network of people out there, but I didn’t. I always looked at it as something that would just happen in the future or I’d go when I got booked. Something in me changed at the beginning of the year around February 2022. I had this urge to just follow my heart, and experience new things that I’d been putting off.
I decided to spend a month in LA and give myself the chance to expand. This was going to be my first time in LA, so I was a little bit nervous. I spent a lot of time prior to going and thought about exactly how I wanted to experience this. I created a mood board of how I expected my month to go and I let that inspire the rest. I decided to make a list of production companies to go to and pitch myself for an opportunity. I ended up buying a one-way ticket to LA, booking a hotel, and getting a rental car. Next thing you know, I found myself driving around LA going to that list of production companies I created at home. I drove around with my computer and introduced myself and asked if I could share my portfolio. I got a few no’s but I also got some yes’s. I only asked for one yes.
Two days after pitching myself, I got a call from productions offering me a 3-day gig with a pretty cool client. I was so grateful and excited to have a turnaround so quickly with a pretty nice job. Soon I began to pick up jobs and new experiences that were more amazing than I could have imagined. I was modeling for a friend’s clothing line, creating amazing content, and I worked BET weekend. I got to make so many friends and connect with people on the other side of the coast.
That was my first step in becoming bicoastal. I have been doing makeup for a while but for some reason, this has been feeling like a new journey in life. Every risk I have taken has been routed in faith and my relationship with God, and all of them have been blessed beyond my imagination.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hey guys, my name is Alexys and I am a Professional Makeup Artist based out of Atlanta. I provide makeup services for events, photoshoots, films, weddings, and more. I love to teach makeup lessons to my clients and other makeup artists.
I have always loved beauty and getting my makeup done for the major events happening in my life. So naturally, when it was my younger cousin’s graduation I immediately offered to do her makeup! That was my first time really trying to do someone’s makeup and I instantly fell in love with the process. At that time I was in college for physical therapy, but I knew in my heart I had to pursue makeup. I ended up dropping out of college and getting a job at MAC Cosmetics.
After a few years at MAC, we parted ways and I began my career as a freelance artist. Early on in my career, I knew the kind of clientele I wanted, and I knew I had to develop my skills further to attract that client. I invested in a few makeup classes from some amazing Makeup Artists like Melissa Ocasio, Mario Dedivanovic, and Tiyana Robinson.
I developed a technique that allowed me to give timeless and glamorous glams that still looks just like you. I specialize in bringing out your confidence and turning it up a few notches. Something about when I lay my brush down for skin prep, the ladies are already feeling super sexy, I would say that’s one thing I’m most proud of throughout my career. I am blessed to create magical moments with all of my clients and it’s the most beautiful energy exchange. Not only do they leave my chair looking amazing but they feel 10x better.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being an artist is the freedom to create and transform. I have been blessed to have clients and projects that allow me creative control for the most part, in those moments I feel the most free. I love the moment of transformation that comes with starting from a blank canvas and creating art.
The excitement and energy makeup brings out of my model or client is always the best feeling!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The best advice I have for growing your clientele is showing up as your authentic self. How can you showcase your talents to potential clients? What sets you apart from other artist? ( spoiler : just being you sets you apart ! )
We are in a time where people have access to people like never before. You want to take advantage of the social platforms out there and showcase your talents your way. First, you want to figure out who your ideal client really is. Then you want to ask yourself “what problems do I solve for potential clients?” and whatever answers come to mind you can use them to guide your content.
Aside from social media, you want to show up in real life! Be yourself, be kind, and be memorable. Word of mouth goes really far in the beauty industry. So you want to position yourself well! Think about the rooms you aren’t in, your name and reputation will be the only thing carrying you, so present yourself as someone you like!
Most importantly, what is your client experiencing? You want to give a VIP experience to your clients, from the booking process being easy and payment friendly, to top-quality skills and services. I recommend creating a signature style that your clients can see themselves in. And when you talk about your work focus on the benefits of the services.
Be confident! You will attract the clientele that resonates with you!
