We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alexis Fletcher a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexis, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a time you helped a customer really get an amazing result through their work with you.

It’s always the orders that help remind you of why you’re doing what you’re doing.

I had a customer who ordered a custom cake for her mom. Well last minute, the daughter wasn’t able to attend the birthday but still wanted the cake delivered to help celebrate.

When I arrived to the delivery location, the mom (birthday lady) was outside waiting with excitement. She even said I was like a celebrity in her home. I asked how did she hear of me and my business, she stated she was a Local First member and found me on their business marketplace. This made me happy that, the resources I’ve created for my business were being utilized by customers.

It was the email after this interaction that really got me. Sometimes in entrepreneurship you have moments of uncertainty, and this day was one of them.

She said: “ I just had to write to let you know how much I enjoyed meeting you on Saturday when you delivered my birthday cake to my home, and how much we all LOVED the cake!!! It was not only stunning, but SOOOOOO delicious! Everyone raved about it! You are truly a gifted baker and artist!”.

I think this meant so much to me for so many reasons. It reminded me of why I started, to help others celebrate with their loved ones. But also, someone truly valuing the art of cake decorating. We also exchanged a few words about the design choice of the birthday cake and the original inspiration created for edible desire.

I’ll never forget that interaction.

Alexis, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

Cool Calm Cakes is a local online bakery created by Alexis Fletcher, owner, cake artist and baker of one of a kind art delicacies yet very delicious cakes and cupcakes.

My love for baking began with my maternal grandmother Rosa in the kitchen. Our birthdays are 1-day apart and fall during the winter holidays. We would often have joint birthday parties and often loved to bake our own birthday cakes. My grandmother loved her some yellow cake with chocolate frosting and I always had to have a chocolate cake.

Cool Calm Cakes serves Phoenix, Arizona, and its surrounding areas. We hope to celebrate with our community for special occasions from birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and more. From our delicious specialty cupcakes or our moist cakes we hope to help many others celebrate life’s special moments with a little something sweet.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?

Social media has been the best source of new clients for me. I remember asking a client how they found me and they said through hash tags on social media. They would be visiting a friend from another state and found using local hashtags to celebrate with a custom cake.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?

Our social media audience quickly rose with family and friends. And while we appreciated their support, it wasn’t our ideal everyday customers. Social media is constantly changes, and one thing I will say is, you have to be willing to go with the changes. When our social media page started, we created a big presence by posting often, interacting with followers and really engaging with their interest. I would definitely recommend using the resources made to business pages. There are so many useful analytics to help grow your pages.
