We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alexander Spinoccia a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alexander , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
Rather than picking a specific defining moment, I do remember a period of time where I started to almost dislike only training people. It began about a year after undergrad finished as I was a full time trainer. I began to wake up everyday and almost dread the thought of going to work. That feeling grew and the more I tried to analyze what was going on within myself, the more I realized I REALLY wanted to be able to use my hands to help people. So, while it wasn’t one specific moment, there was a specific time period where I knew I needed to make the jump to pursue further schooling.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Went from being a full time personal trainer/Strength Coach, to then pursuing Chiropractic school in Upstate New York. Throughout my schooling I continued with online training and promised myself I’d always mix chiropractic and training when I came out of school. Now, my business model is based on the idea that I want to help you get out of pain but why not then continue training? Everyone needs to get stronger or more mobile so I work with some of my patients to develop a new strength program and push them in the gym.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Not everyone wants or needs your help. Naturally, I have always wanted everyone to see the value I provide but like any other business; not everyone needs the help or wants to buy from you. Whether it’s a product or a service, Ive come to understand that the only thing I can do is show people up front what I can do for them and let them decide. If I’m not the right person for you, that’s okay! I used to take it personally especially when I first started personal training but now I understand the reality that not everyone is ready to take the next step, whatever step that may be.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
I would choose the same profession over and over. It compliments and parallels my love for personal training so well. MAYBE one day I’ll consider medical school but for now my focus is this.
