We were lucky to catch up with Alexa Fitzpatrick recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexa, thanks for joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
I could never figure out what I wanted to do with my life, and with each upcoming year after highschool the question continued to weigh on me. I knew that I wanted to dedicate my life to helping people, but with so many choices, I felt that I would have to try everything until something stuck out. I started my journey into healthcare in the fall of 2019 thinking it would just be another opportunity to try something new and see what came out of it.Soon I found out how much I loved working with people in the medical field and was starting to realize my interest in the different routes that healthcare had to offer, but it wasn’t until the pandemic hit in 2020 that things really started to change for me.
If I were to pick a moment that changed the trajectory of my life it would be a week after May 15th 2020. On the 15th,I had just taken my first COVID-19 test a few days prior and had gotten my first copy of results. My boss had called me into her office and while I walked down, I thought there’s no way that this new scary virus is in Colorado and there’s absolutely no way I had it. But when I walked into my bosses office, I knew, and staring at me was a big ol positive sign. Out of 50 employees I was the first to have gotten it and since it was so new nobody knew what to do. I was scared to go home to my unprotected family and I was worried about how sick I would get. I stayed in my parents basement hoping no one else in my family would get it and I sprayed Lysol on just about everything I touched. Exactly a week after finding out I was positive, I woke up feeling like I couldn’t breathe and I panicked while trying to force myself breathe in and out. I wasn’t sure where to go since I was positive and finally I got ahold of an urgent care that would take me. I drove myself and when I pulled up people in full hazmat like gear were outside waiting for me. They wheeled me to the back to a room with a sign on the door that said CAUTION, DO NOT ENTER FOR RISK OF EXPOSURE, PPE REQUIRED. I was again scared until a nice man came in to give me an IV, he kept me calm and made me feel comfortable, for once in the difficult week, he had made me feel safe even through wearing an n95. I asked him if he was a doctor and he told me that he was an EMT. After speaking to a doctor and finding out there wasn’t much they could do, I went home and googled what an EMT was.
Fast forward to 2023, I successfully finished EMS school and got my EMT. I’m currently pursuing a Bachelor of Applied Science in Emergency Service Administration in hopes of working with FEMA and I work at one of the biggest hospitals in Colorado where I get opportunities to work in multiple departments. I truly don’t think I would be where I am now if it wasn’t for the EMT I met in urgent care and I’m so thankful for everyday after I met him.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a 23yr old signed model and healthcare professional who is pursuing a further career into the emergency administration field! I will always consider Colorado my home, but I’m originally from Rio rancho,New Mexico.
While I am forever dedicated to the medical field, The modeling industry will always have my heart! I started modeling 5 years ago and I haven’t looked back since. I started by doing trade shoots through Facebook groups until I got confident enough to get signed to an agency, And I’ve been signed to Wilhelmina Denver for about 3 years. Through modeling I have been able to have some of the most amazing experiences with all of the wonderful people that Colorado has to offer from photographers to makeup artists to even food creators. I would say about 90% of the relationships that I have with my friends and peers came out of this career and I’m so thankful for it!
I am proud to be a representative for the plus/curve community and I hope to continue to show girls that it doesn’t matter what size you are, everyone is a model and everyone’s bodies are beautiful! Being different and unique is what sets us apart from the rest so you got to show it off!
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I am so happy with both of my careers, and all the opportunities that I’ve gotten through both of them, I wouldn’t change it for the world! If I went back I’d want things to stay exactly the same!
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
My family motto is “Fitzpatrick’s never give up” and I think that applies to every career, especially in the medical field! Sometimes things are going to get hard and sometimes it’s not going to go your way but remembering to never give up and carrying on is something that will help you go farther than you ever dreamed. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the perseverance and resilience that comes with never giving up!
